Blackpool and Yorkshire Championships

The second northern track and Field league meeting was held in Bury on Sunday 4th June and despite being short a few regular high scoring members the mighty harriers still finished in second place behind Bolton, turning the tables from the first match result.

Naomi Harvey Franklin once again getting the highest points for the team with a fantastic 37points for her 7 events, 11 points ahead of Aideen Farrell with 26 for her 6 events. In the men's team young George Orton had three second place finishes rewarding him with 21 points and Will Lander not far behind with 18points for his individual sprint and relay performances.

George's silver performances were in the LJ, TJ and 100m, the latter in which he equaled his PB of 11.5sec while Will Lander was second in the B race just 100th of a second behind in 11.6sec. Will then ran a cracking 400m finishing in 2nd place and setting a new PB of 51seconds.

Jacob Harman and Ted Chamberlain both new to the team this year proved their worth; Jacob jumped 5m62 in the long jump finishing 3rd B and Ted ran his B 400m in a respectable 54.7sec. These three were joined by Lavell Pierre, who having already come 4th A in 800m and 3rd B in 1500m still had energy left and the men finished 3rd in the 4x400m relay.

Kai Sunman ran a great B 800m finishing 2nd , only 200ths of a second off his PB. We're hoping he will get under the 2minutes this season. Kai was a great team player filling in in the 200m having never raced that distance before and in tough competiton he ran well to finish 5th and he also finsihed third in the B triple Jump.

One of the younger members of the team Niall O'Connell is in fantastic shape this year at training and he prooved it by knocking 3seconds of his 1500m PB coming in 2nd A in a time of 4:15.00. In the longer distance men's 5k Alex Robinson and Dave Watson once again ran tactical races with times of 16:05.7 and 15:11.0 respectively.

Craig Sheard one of the team's all rounders toughed it out and covered Dan's usual steeple chase event and he did not let us down running a PB race and finishing 3rd B with Phil Hewitt leading him home in the A race, where he was also placed 3rd despite taking a tumble over the first water jump.

Craig also cleared the barriers well in the 400mH coming 3rd B with Eddie Hinchcliffe finishing 4th A as well as 5th in the 110 high hurdles.

On the field our dedicated throwers who are down training week in week out earned our team massive points across the four events. Kit Burgoyne achieved two well deserved personal bests for the discuss and hammer and Tony Shepherd in the discuss and shot.

The female contingent managed to put two athletes in every event giving them maximum point scoring opportunities. Not that it's important as we are of course all one team but....the women did get more points on the day. :-) There were four Pbs from the girls. Naoimi Harvey Franklin, with her busy day ran a strong 400m in 62seconds winning the B race while Ruby finished 4th in the A after her fantastice 2nd place 800m race. Lucy Byram also improved her 3k best time by almost 20seconds clocking up 10:34.3. Maggie Sykes joined Lucy in the 3k finishing in 2nd on the B race.

The two other personal records were set in the hammer throw by Jo Bailey Taylor when she improved by 7m on her Blackpool performance and Ann Smith made a welcome return to the team and threw 17.11. Imagine what she could do with some practice!

Keeping the throws in the family Daisy Smith then joined Jo for the discuss and the javelin. No Pbs this month but she thres well collecting valuable points.

Over the barriers we got almost maximum points with Naomi Harvey Franklin and Aideen Farrell winning the A and B 400m distance. In the sprint hurdles expert hurdler Lauren Storr had a great race against her main rival from Blackpool who just had the edge over our harrier this time. Top points scorer of the day Naomi won the B race with her ever improving technique.

Then the springy and speedy gang of Aideen, Genevieve, Ruby and Lauren shared the Long, Triple and High jump between them getting three 3rd, two 5th and a 4th places. They're all feeling warmed up now and ready to set some records next time out! With a pole to help over the jump Aideen and Jo Bailey Taylor managed a 3rd A and 2nd B place in the Pole vault.

Our middle distance athletes did not disappoint with Ruby finishing 2nd in the A 800 and Helena

Croft, who is more used to longer distances, supported strongly with a 3rd place in the B race. Not surprising Olivia Sykes won her 1500m A race and fellow Examiner prize winner Erica Byram got a clear second place in the B race.

Both women's relays were exciting and competitive with the sprinters finishing in 2nd, the highest they've been placed in a few years since their club record 3 years ago and the 4x4 team were third against strong competition.

Having won the first match and 2nd in this one we are now 2nd in our division with two events to go. The next competition will be in Wakefield on Sunday the 9th July and then we go to Bolton on Saturday 5th August.
