Northern T&F League Match 2 at Whitehaven

Holmfirth Harriers’ undertook a 340 mile round trip for the 2nd Northern League Division 2 match held at Whitehaven. With a large number of our top athletes unavailable, it was crucial not to lose the advantage gained in Match 1

In the Sprint events Harvey Woodhead was in excellent form to win the 100m and 200m ‘A’ races with new best times of 11.2 and 23.0secs respectively. He was joined by Will Lander in the ‘B’100m out dipping the Blackpool athlete to win in 11.6secs and by Craig Sheard in the ‘B’ 200m, also setting a PB with 23.9secs. Will Lander and Kai Sunman teamed up in the 400m crossing the line in 51.9secs and 55.0secs respectively.

Lauren Storr competed in both the ‘A’ 100m and 200m recording times of 13.9secs and 30.6secs respectively. She was ably supported by Ellie Sunman in the 100m, crossing the line in 15.1secs and by Ruby Sykes in the 200m‘B’ achieving a personal best time of 28.7secs. Ellie Sunman took on the responsibility for running the ‘A’ 400m to gain valuable points with her time of 73.0secs, whilst team mate Daisy Smith finished a superb 3rd place in the ‘B’ race with 72.4secs.

James Knapper made a welcome return in the Jumps, recording 5.23m in the Long Jump, 11.26m in the Triple Jump and 1.60m in the High Jump. Kai Sunman and Eddie Hinchliffe gave valuable support in the ‘B’ events. It was great to see Lauren Storr making a return to the Long Jump and finishing 3rd ‘A’ with 4.89m whilst Zoe Storr recorded 4.16m in the ‘B’ event. Genevieve Durrans made a welcome return with creditable performances in both the Triple Jump and High Jump achieving 8.59m and 1.35m respectively. Zoe again gave valuable support to finish 3rd ‘B’ in the triple Jump with 8.13m, a new PB, whilst Daisy Smith also finished 3rd ‘B’ in the High jump.

In the Hurdle events Lauren Storr was just edged into 2nd place in the ‘A’100mH, but given the same time of 15.9secs. Lauren also had a good run in the ‘A’ 400m Hurdles to finish 3rd in 75.8secs. She was ably supported by Genevieve Durrans winning the ‘B’ 100mH and Zoe Storr’s 2nd place in the 400mH. Eddie Hinchliffe and Craig Sheard renewed their rivalry in the men’s 400m Hurdles setting times of 68.6secs and 74.3secs respectively. Eddie set a season’s best time of 22.6secs later in the day in the 110mH.

The clubs female distance athletes were in sparkling form. Ruby Sykes won the ‘A’ 800m in 2mins 23.2, whilst Zoe Storr was 2nd ‘B’ in 2mins 31.4. In the 1500m, Ruby was 2nd’A’ in 5mins07.4secs and Zoe won the ‘B’ race in 5mins 30.4secs. Maggie Sykes and Helena Croft both had splendid runs to finish 4th ‘A’ and 1st‘B’ in the 3000m with times of 11mins 01.8secs and 11mins 57.6secs. Kai Sunman ran a solid 800m race against a top class field crossing the line in 2mins 06.6secs. He was well supported by Lavell Pierre who was 2nd in the ‘B’ race. Lavelle was in action later in the 1500m with Niall O’Connell. Niall’s time of 4mins 18.7secs lopped 9secs off his previous best time. Dan Shaw and Craig Sheard teamed up again for the 3000m Steeplechase. Both ran well to finish 2nd ‘A’ and ‘B’ with Craig setting a new PB of 14mins 16.4secs. The 5000m saw Chris and Mark Law making their debut on the track. Both ran well to finish 3rd in their respective races with Chris recording 16mins 13.8secs and Mark 19mins 43.3secs.

Kit Burgoyne and Club Stalwart Andy Storr teamed up for the throws events. Kit set PB’s in both the Hammer and Discus with distances of 25.08m and 17.79m. Andy’s best performance was his 19.65m the Discus. Eddie Hinchliffe was up against some 50m Javelin throwers, but acquitted himself well with a throw of 39.67m. Craig Sheard gained valuable points with his 24.53m effort, a new PB. Katie Zientek threw well in all her events, her best performances being the javelin with a distance of 26.44m followed by the Discus with 21.22m. Anne Smith gave excellent support in both the Hammer and Shot, whilst Daisy Smith finished 3rd ‘B’ in both the Discus and Javelin setting a new PB in the Javelin with a distance of 17.88m.

In the relays at the end of the day’s competition both Holmfirth’s Men’s 4X100m and 4X400m teams ran superb races to finish a clear 2nd. In the Women’s 4 X 100m Holmfirth were 5th and in the 4X400m were 4th.

The team of officials also worked hard throughout the day, Team Manager John Adrienne Dewhirst, Time keepers Jonathan Sykes and Alwyn Dewhirst, Track Judges John Buckingham and Ian Moore, Field Judges Adrienne Dewhirst, James Durrans, Dan Shaw, Olivia Sykes, Andy Storr all played a valuable part gaining maximum officiating points to add to the total.

After 37 events, Holmfirth were 4th. The points awarded gave Holmfith a total of 9 points, equal second on match points, but 3rd on total points scored. With the leaders in both the Mens and Women’s Top Point Scorer unavailable for this match, the lead has changed and the competition is now extremely close. The Men’s Top Point Scorers awards are currently: 1st Craig Sheard (40), 2nd Will Lander (38) 3rd Kai Sunman (37). The Women’s Top Point Scorers awards are: 1st Zoe Storr (43), 2nd Katie Zientek (40), 3rd Ruby Sykes (39) .

Holmfirth Harriers AC have acquitted themselves well at this high level despite the distance travelled The next match is hosted by Bolton on 3rd July.
