Northern Track & Field League 2015

Leigh, Division 2 Northern Track & Field

Holmfirth Harriers AC travelled to Leigh for the opening Division 2 Northern Track & Field fixture where Holmfirth faced teams from Blackpool, Bolton, East Cheshire, Leigh and Seaton. Competing at this high level is very demanding for the athletes and every event needs to be filled. Despite fixture clashes with weddings, exams and the British Universities Championships, the athletes did a magnificent job in their events to put us in 2nd place, the best performance ever in an opening match.

Naomi Harvey-Franklin and Aideen Farrell got the Track races off to a splendid start with their victories in both the ‘A’ & ‘B’ 400ms to gain maximum points. Lauren Storr opened her season on the track with a fine performance to win the 100m Hurdles in a time of 17.4secs, with team mate Naomi Harvey-Franklin also winning the ‘B’ event with 18.9secs. At the end of a busy day Naomi heads the leader board with a total of 31 points, whilst Lauren is in 3rd place with 21 points.

Jake Richardson and Eddie Hinchliffe teamed up for the Men’s Hurdles events to gain valuable points. This was Eddie’s debut at senior level and he finished an excellent 3rd in the ‘B’ 400mH and 2nd in the ‘B’110H amassing 16 points and 2nd place on the leader board. .

Throws specialist, Dennis St Louis made a scintillating start to the 2015 season with three PB’s. He finished 2nd ‘A’ in both the discus and the Shot with distances of 29.74m and 10.14m respectively. He led the Hammer until he was overhauled in the last 2 throws of the competition. His throw of 30.50m gave him 3rd place. Andy Storr finished 3rd ‘B’ in the both the Hammer and Discus with a 4th place in the Shot to gain valuable team points. In the Javelin Dennis was joined by Eddie Hinchliffe who threw 35.76m in the ‘A’ event. Dennis now heads the leader board with 23 points and Eddie in 2nd place with 16 points.

With Holmfirth’s top female throwers unavailable for this match it was left to non-specialists to plug the gaps. The best performance came in the Shot with Naomi Harvey-Franklin’s 7.50m and Zoe Storr’s 6.87m giving them 4th ‘A’ and 3rd ‘B’ respectively. Daisy Smith, one of the youngest members of the team, performed well in both the Discus and Javelin to gain necessary points.

James Knapper made an outstanding debut in the Northern League with a 1.75m clearance in the ‘A’ High Jump to give him 2nd place, having previously finished 2nd ‘B’ in the Long Jump. His point score taking him into 3rd place on the top points leader board. George Orton leapt into 2nd ‘A’ in the long jump with 5.63m and was 4th = in the High Jump. George teamed up with Eddie Hinchliffe for the Triple jump recording 11.20m and 10.71m respectively. Eddie had improved his previous best distance by over a metre.

There were some good performances in the women’s jumps events with Genevieve Durrans finishing 2nd ‘A’ in the high jump and 3rd ‘B’ in the Triple Jump. Aideen Farrell opened her day with a 2nd in the Pole Vault, before recording 9.42m in the Triple Jump and 4.28m in the Long jump. Aideen’s 25 points gained on the day put her 2nd on the leader board. Ruby Sykes gave excellent support with 4.16m to give her 2nd ‘B in the L Jump.

The standard was high in the endurance events, however Lavell Pierre and Kai Sunman performed well in the middle distance events, opening with times of 2mins 06.09secs and 2mins 05.1secs respectively. Alex Robinson teamed up with Lavell in the 1500m recording times of 4mins 37.1secs and 4mins 45.1secs respectively. Dave Watson and Dave Turnbull made a great start on the track in the 5000m both finishing 2nd place in their races with times of 15mins 44.2secs and 16mins 25.4secs. There was a valiant effort by Jake Richardson in the Steeplechase, crossing the line in 3rd place.

Holmfirth’s women’s endurance athletes Sophie Spencer and Ruby Sykes were first in action in the 800m. Sophie placed 4th in the ‘A’ race with a time of 2mins 26.0secs, whilst Ruby won the ‘B’ race in a time of 2mins 30.6secs, both securing valuable points for the team. Ruby later teamed up with Zoe Storr for the 1500m to finish 4th ‘A’ and 2nd ‘B’ respectively. Zoe went on to secure good points in the 3000m  ‘A’ race, whilst Katherine McFadzean ran bravely for her 4th place in the ‘B’ event.

In the Sprint events Harvey Woodhead shouldered the responsibility of being the ‘A’ runner setting a PB with his 11.7secs in the 100m along with 24.2secs in the 200m. He was joined by Craig Sheard, whose best performance came in the 200m with his time of 25,3secs.   In the 400m Will Lander ran a magnificent time of 51.2 secs, a new PB whilst Kai Sunman gave excellent support to record 55.4secs in the ‘B’ race.

Lauren Storr and Naomi Harvey-Franklin lined up for the 100m to finish 4th ‘A’ and 3rd ‘B’ respectively. Lauren was joined by Sophie Smith in the 200m who set a new PB with her 29.3secs effort. In the ‘A’ 400m Sophie ran a strong bend to finish 2nd with a new PB of 61.7secs. Caitlin Smith making her debut for the senior team gained valuable points with her 3rd place in the ‘B’ event.

The relay events always provide an exciting finish and both teams did well as they were up against specialist 100m and 400m sprinters. In both the Women’s 4 X 100m and 4X400m they were 4th whilst the men also finished 4th in both the 4 X 100m and the 4 X 400m.

Finally the club’s officials John McFadzean, Adrienne Dewhirst, Richard Szostac, John Townsend, Ian Moore, Craig Sheard and helpers, Alwyn Dewhirst and Jonathan Sykes, Ann Hinchliffe, Dan Shaw and James Durrans ensured the full complement of 35 points could be added to the athlete’s scores to give a final match score

This was an excellent team performance at the start of the new season and all the athletes gave their best to support the team.
