Northern T&FL Match 2

Northern Track and Field League Match 2

Holmfirth Harriers’ athletes were out in force for the 2nd Northern League Division 2 match held at the Carlisle on 7th June. Currently in 4th place it was crucial that Holmfirth’s athletes performed well if they were to ensure 2nd Division status next year. The weather conditions were atrocious with torrential rain and rumbling thunder in the distance which meant that times and distances would be of less importance than the points gained from the athletes finishing position in each event. The athletes responded magnificently to the task to win their first match of the season recording 13 event wins in the process.

Jordan Toth 200m webIn the Sprint events former English Schools champion Jordan Toth was in good form to win the100m and 200m ‘A’ races with times of 11.0 and 22.7secs respectively. He was joined by Will Lander who finished 3rd in the ‘B’ 100m in 11.7secs and won the ‘B’ 200m event with a time of 23.8secs, a new PB. Kai Sunman was involved in a very competitive 400m ‘A’ race crossing the line in 4th place in 54.3secs to pick up valuable team points, whilst Lavell Pierre finished an excellent 2nd in his debut for the team in the ‘B’ race with 56.1secs. Meanwhile Harvey Woodhead won the Guest 100m with Faisal Shah and Reece Joseph finishing 3rd and 4th respectively.

Naomi Harvey-Franklin competed in both the ‘A’ 100m and 200m recording times of 14.0secs and 29.6secs respectively. She was ably supported by Cara Penfold, crossing the line in 14.7secs in the ‘B’ 100m before achieving a personal best time of 31.0secs in the ‘B’ 200m. Sophie Spencer ran a cracking 400m to win in a new best time of 63.7secs, whilst team mate Ruby Sykes finished a superb 2nd place in the ‘B’ race with 66.3secs.

George Orton crop webReece Joseph and George Orton made their debuts for the Senior Team in the Long Jump recording 4.68m and 4.65m to gain valuable team points. George later teamed up with Robert Hinchliffe Smith in both the Triple Jump and High Jump. Their best performance came in the Triple Jump when George set a massive new PB of 11.45m to finish 4th ’A’ against older more experienced athletes and Rob finished 3rd in the ‘B’ event with 10.19m.

It was great to see one of Holmfirth’s leading junior female athletes, Lucy Taylor making her debut in the senior team. Lucy teamed up with Ruby Sykes and on this occasion Lucy had the edge over Ruby with 4.17m against 4.01m in the Long jump, and 8.44m against 8.00m in the Triple Jump. In the High jump Lucy was given excellent support by Katie Franklin both jumping 1.25m, but on count back Lucy was 3rd ‘A’, whilst Katie won the ‘B’ event.

In the absence of Lauren Storr, Naomi Harvey Franklin took on the responsibility of the ‘A’ 100m Hurdles and was edged into 3rd with a time of 18.7secs. Naomi also had a good run in the ‘A’ 400m Hurdles to finish 4th in 74.4secs. She was ably supported by Katie Franklin finishing in 4th in the 100mH with a time of 21.6secs and a splendid second in the 400mH with 75.2secs. Rob Hinchliffe-Smith and Jake Richardson renewed their rivalry in the men’s Hurdles events setting times of 72.9secs and 72.6secs in the 400mH, then 25.3secs and 25.2secs respectively in the 110mH.

The clubs distance athletes were in good form. Kai Sunman ran an excellent 800m race to finish 2nd ‘A’ with 2mins 03.9secs, a new PB. He was well supported by Lavell Pierre, who was also in sparkling form to win the ‘B’ race in a new best time of 2mins 02.2secs. Peter Brooke was in action later in the 1500m with Richard Smith. Peters’ time of 4mins 14secs was a new PB and gave him 3rd ‘A’ just ahead of Richard who won the ‘B’ event in 4mins 16secs. Richard Smith produced a splendid 2nd in the ‘A’ 3000m Steeplechase in a time of 10mins 00.7secs, whilst Jake Richardson gave excellent support with his 2nd place in the ‘B’ race in 12mins 39.1secs. Dave Watson ran another strong race to finish 2nd in the 5000m in 15mins 43.3secs, whilst Stuart Sharp ensured good points by winning the ‘B’ event in 16mins 05.2secs. for the event with his 2nd place in the ‘B’ race in 16mins 05.2secs.

Katie Zientek won both the ‘B’ Discus (19.11m) and ‘B’ Javelin (926.71m) with a n excellent 2nd in the ‘B’ Shot. Katie Zientek is currently in joint first place in the Top Points Scorer Award with a total of 49points along with Naomi Harvey–Franklin. Katie Franklin is in 3rd place despite a massive haul of 39 points, having missed the first fixture.

His best performances were his 4th place in the ‘A’ Shot with 9.12m and 5th ‘A’ in the Hammer with 21.43m, both personal bests. He was joined by Scott Smith, who set new PB’s in the hammer and Javelin. Both are relative novices but show great commitment and enthusiasm for the events.

In the relays at the end of the day’s competition Holmfirth was able to field it’s best team of sprint relay specialists.  Harvey Woodhead flew out of the blocks and ran a good bend to hand over to Faisal Shah. Faisal and Will Lander worked hard to maintain contact with the leaders so when Jordan Toth took the baton, he stormed through to win in 46.0secs. In the Women’s 4 X 100m Holmfirth were 4th in 57.8secs. In the 4X400m Both the Men’s and Women’s teams finished in 3rd place to gain valuable points.
