ITU Paratriathlon World Series Iseo, Italy

itu paratriathlon world series - transition

After a successful venture as a Guide at the Eton Dorney ITU World Cup, Elite Triathlete Mark Buckingham travelled to Iseo in Northern Italy for the ITU Paratriathlon World Series on Saturday 30th June 2018.

Mark was Guide for Dave Ellis the reigning World Champion for Paratriathlon Visually Impaired (PTVI) (B3). Although the two men hadn’t worked together for almost 5 weeks, they swam well in Lake Iseo over the 1 lap swim course of 750m emerging from the water in first place with a time of 11mins. They were quick in transition and soon on the tandem for the three-lap 20km bike course, which was quite flat with breath-taking views of the lake and through the scenic parts of the old city of Iseo.

The men worked well together in very hot temperatures, managing to stay in the lead which had been reduced by a Spanish team who were over a minute faster on the bike. Ellis and Buckingham recorded the fourth fastest bike leg of 29.40, which no doubt could be improved if the men were able to train together.

The men were slick in transition and began to extend their lead on the 4-lap run course of 5km around the streets in the centre of Iseo completing the race in the main square and recording the fastest run time of 16.38 and a total time of 1.01.51, including the time of 3.16 they set-off after the athletes in the PTVI (B1) category.

This was only the second time Mark Buckingham has been a Guide and he and Dave Ellis were delighted to win gold medals in a World Series race ahead of Hector Catala Laparra (B2) of Spain 1.04.53 and Maurizio Romeo (B2) of home nation Italy 1.05.59.

The day after the race Buckingham travelled to Denmark where he is due to take part in the World Duathlon Championships in Odense on Friday 6 July 2018.
