Disappointing day for Holmfirth Trio at Blenheim Palace Triathlon

bike transition

Three of Holmfirth Harriers athletes took part in the Bloodwise Blenheim Palace Triathlon on Sunday. The weather was superb for the early morning races with the ladies starting proceedings and Lucy Farquhar entering the race during a busy period preparing for exams.

Lucy a student at Oxford University based close to Blenheim Palace took the opportunity to race locally, but after a disappointing swim went out on the bike course behind the race leaders and not feeling 100% decided to drop out of the race. The women’s race was won by Leeds based triathlete Bronwen Owen in 1.07.44 with Olivia Matthews 2nd 1.08.23 and Jenny Manners taking the bronze medal in 1.08.34.

Mark Buckingham and Lewis Byram took part in the Elite Men’s race and both had a tough time in the 750m open water swim, with the men coming out of the water in 18th and 19th places respectively (8.56 and 8.58). A group of six men managed to get away on the first of three laps on the 19.8km bike course. The leaders worked well together and managed to open a lead of 25 seconds on the first lap and extended the advantage to about 45 seconds on lap two.

On the final lap Byram got held-up by a crash just ahead of him, whilst Buckingham using his experience managed to get to the front of the chasing group as they approached transition, reducing the deficit on the leaders. He dismounted where he saw two Marshall’s flagging vigorously which he assumed was the dismount line. Unfortunately, the line was for the chip timing and he had dismounted too soon having to run much further to T2. Apparently, this had happened to athletes in an earlier race which others had seen and they dismounted at the correct point. His effort to close the gap on the race leaders had been in vain completing the bike course in 28.49 with Lewis Byram dismounting in the correct place one second faster.

The run was over a two-lap course of 5.4km and the break-away group were unable to be caught with Iestyn Harrett taking the victory in 58.14, followed by Morgan Davies 58.20 and Chris Perham 58.28. Mark Buckingham finished 8th in 59.46 with a run time of 18.18 and Lewis Byram was 18th in 1.01.44 and a run time of 20.01
