Eton Dorney ITU World Cup for Paratriathletes

Eton Dorney ITU World Cup

Britain’s Elite paratriathletes won nine gold medals as Eton Dorney hosted an ITU World Cup event for the first time. There were gold medal performances by Commonwealth Champions, Joe Townsend and Jade Jones and Paralympic Champions Andy Lewis and Martin Shultz of Germany.

Holmfirth Harriers Elite Triathlete Mark Buckingham was asked to compete as a Guide for Dave Ellis a Visually Impaired athlete in the Category (PTV1) (B3) due to his regular guide, Carl Shaw having broken his collarbone in a cycling accident. Dave Ellis won the Gold Medal in the World Paratriathlon Series in Yokohama two weeks ago and was keen to take part in the event at Eton Dorney.

The men met in Loughborough last Monday after Mark had returned from Kazakhstan and they had a brief swim session together and a trial on the tandem which went quite well. Mark subsequently travelled to Buckinghamshire on Sunday for the race briefing and prepare for the race on Bank Holiday Monday. The two men started the 750m swim at a good pace, Ellis formerly represented Great Britain as a swimmer at the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games, but Buckingham is now an accomplished swimmer. They soon overtook some of the opposition recording the fastest time for the swim of 9 mins 55 secs, over a minute ahead of the Serbian team. The men worked well together on the 20km 4-lap bike leg and quickly moved into the lead.

Buckingham had noticed four-time XTERRA Triathlon World Champion and three times ITU Cross Triathlon World Champion, Conrad Stolz of South Africa was the Guide for a South African athlete in the same race and thought there may be a strong challenge from the South African team, but it soon became clear his partner was not as strong as the former World Champion. Ellis and Buckingham began to extend their lead, but a mechanical problem hindered their progress as they completed the bike course in 27.54, twelve seconds quicker than an Australian team.

On the two-lap 5km run course Ellis and Buckingham looked comfortable, finishing the run in 17.44, thirty seconds quicker than their nearest rivals with a total time of 1.00.43 to clinch gold medals. Lazar Filipovic (B3) of Serbia won the silver medal in 1.04.02 and Italian Maurizio Romeo (B3) clinched the bronze medal in 1.04.49. There were also athletes from Australia, France, South Africa, Ireland and the Netherlands who completed the course in the visually impaired category.

Dave Ellis was happy with his new partner and felt very comfortable on the bike. Buckingham enjoyed the experience and thinks they could greatly improve their performance with more practice. This week Mark returns to the Standard Distance Triathlon on Sunday at Blenheim Palace and then plans to do the Ironman 70.3 event in Staffordshire the following week.
