London Triathlon 2017 finish - Mark Buckingham

The London Triathlon is the World's largest triathlon, where thousands of triathletes of all abilities take part over a busy weekend. The highlight for many spectators is the Elite Women and Elite Men’s races contested over the Olympic Distance. The races started in front of the London ExCeL, swimming 1 lap (1500m) of the Royal Victoria Dock, 4 laps (40kms) from the ExCeL heading west to a turn point at Leamouth and the opposite direction to a second turn point at Gallions and from T2 in the ExCeL, a 10km run (3 laps) through the East Car Park along the dock edge, back to the finish in the ExCeL.

Three members of Holmfirth Harriers AC contested the Elite races, Lucy Farquhar, Lewis Byram and Mark Buckingham. The Women’s race was won by India Lee in 2.03.16 with Tamsyn Moana-Veale of Australia 2nd and Lucy Hall 3rd. Twenty-year-old Lucy Farquhar competed well in a quality field, but was possibly a little below par after a viral infection finishing 11th in 2.14.15. The elite races were both non-wetsuit swims, although the air temperature was quite cool. Two or three men strayed off the swim course on the return leg, with junior, Will Crudgington recording a fast time of 18.44. Lewis Byram and Mark Buckingham completed the swim in 19.15 and 19.18 respectively. Crudgington and another athlete had a swift departure on the bike course building a lead of 20 seconds, but the experienced athletes in the chasing group, worked together and the leaders eventually became part of a larger leading group. Buckingham lead the athletes into T2 recording a time of 59.14 and Byram was close behind but crashed on the approach to T2, losing valuable time. Callum Johnson initially had the lead on the run course, but by the end of the first lap Buckingham had caught him and then began to open up a lead. Mark went on to win the race in 1.52.05, recording the fastest run time of 30.16. Callum Johnson finished 2nd and Anthony Haynes 3rd. Lewis Byram was clearly suffering from his injuries, but did very well to finish 12th overall in 1.58.03.

The London Triathlon 2017 including the Elite races are scheduled to be broadcast on Channel 4 on Saturday 29 July 2017 at 7.05am or Channel 4 +1 at 8.05am.
