National Cross Country relays 2018

Saturday 3rd November 2018, Berry Hill Park, Mansfield

The Saucony English Cross Country Relay Championships was held in Berry Hill Park in Mansfield on Saturday 3rd November, on an undulating and spectator-friendly course. Attracting all standards of athlete, from grassroots to the elite, runners get to compete alongside international athletes. Well over 1,000 teams were entered across the 10 races of the day, with 170 entered in the Senior Women’s event.

home in 81st position

Holmfirth Harriers were represented by five runners in the Under 13 age group. This is the first time many of them had taken part in a national competition, and the event provided an opportunity to race in great conditions on a wonderful course, against tough competition. It provided a great warm-up for the second West Yorkshire Cross Country League race the following day, though the fixture clash did account for a smaller turn out that usual from the Harriers.

First to set off were the girls, with one full team and a second incomplete team: Annie McLean and Alice Feetham both set off on leg one, running well. Alice handed over to Bea Ayres on the second leg, and Tilda Turner taking on the final leg, placing the team in 81st position. Annie had finished leg 1 in a provisional 77th place.

Next to run were the Under 13 boys, with the club fielding just one athlete; Harry Gilligan. Harry performed well against the best cross country runners in England, and his provisional place was 87th.

Chris Law gets the mens 'A'
team out to a strong start

The Senior women’s event was the penultimate of the day and was held over a 3km course of three legs. In a packed start of 140 runners, Helen Berry led off for the A team and worked through to finish in 31st (10:29). Ruby Sykes ran strongly on leg 2 to bring the team up to an impressive 19th position. Claire Leaver-Hewitt took on the anchor leg, dropping five places to 24th (11:41).

Helena Croft was justifiably pleased with her run on leg 1 for the B team in 67th place (11:54). Debbie Beck clocked a PB on this dry course on leg 2 in 82nd (14:48) and newcomer to the event, Heidi King, made every effort to pick up two places to bring the team home in 80th place (14:52).

The Harriers' senior men had two teams taking part in the 4x5km relay event. Chris Law started for the ‘A’ team and ran a strong leg to finish in 29th (15.54). It was then Kai Sunman who took over to finish in 39th (16.52). Joe Law ran a solid third leg for 46th (17.58) while Steve Green (17.34) picked up a place on the last leg to bring the team home in 45th

Phil Hewitt led out for the ‘B’ Team and he ran well for 99th (18.18). Jake Harman followed and worked hard to pick up 19 places and come home in 80th (18.03). Andy Shelbourne had a solid run for 89th place (20.08) before handing over to Jonny Sykes who brought the team home in 93rd (20.12).
