Northern Athletics Cross Country Relay Championships 2018

Saturday 20th October 2018, Graves Park in Sheffield

The best young runners across the north of England travelled to Graves Park in Sheffield last Saturday to take part in the first competition of the 2018 cross country season, the Northern Athletics Cross Country Relays. Holmfirth Harriers were well represented by 15 runners across the Under 11 to Under 15 age groups.

With no Under 17s taking part, first to run for the club were the Under 11 boys: Callum Noble, finishing 17th on the first leg (an impressive run that put him 33rd overall, out of 88 runners), with Alexander Gilligan taking over for the second leg and bringing in the incomplete team home in a provisional 26th position.

Next to run were the Under 13 girls, with the club fielding two full teams. Outstanding performance of the day went to Imogen Wolff, running the first leg for the ‘A’ team and crossing the line in first place to hand over to Libby Pringle, who in turn handed over to Alice Feetham. The ‘A’ team finished in 23rd position overall, with Imogen’s time standing as the fastest of all 136 runners in this category – a fantastic achievement! The ‘B’ team were not too far behind, with Annie McLean, Zara Farrow and Elizabeth Gilligan working well together to finish the race in a creditable 39th place.

The Under 13 boys race saw a Harriers team of Jack Sunderland, Harry Gilligan and Calum McFarlane finish in an impressive 25th place, with particular credit going to Calum for having the 9th fastest time on the tricky third leg.

Matthew Burke showed tremendous resilience as the sole representative of the club at Under 15 level, with a time that put him in the top half of a very competitive field. The Under 15 girls were the final full club junior team to compete on the day, with Elena Inch, Mollie Scaramuzza and Isabel Richardson combining well to bring the team home in 18th place, the best junior team position on the day, with Isabel having the 7th fastest time on her leg.

With a number of junior runners taking part in cross country relays for the first time, the day proved to be an enjoyable experience and a great warm-up for the first West Yorkshire Cross Country League race the following day.

The seniors were represented by a sole men’s team due to a very busy weekend of fixture clashes. Conditions were good and fast times were expected over the demanding two-mile circuit. St Mary’s University student, Chris Law, led out for Holmfirth and ran an excellent first leg coming home in 13th (10.32). Taking over on leg two was another youngster, Alex Robinson, who ran equally well for 14th place (11.12). Veteran of many relays, Steve Green took over on leg three and worked hard for 15th place (11.41) before passing onto the much-improved Jake Harman (11.41) who ran strongly to bring the team home in a well-deserved 15th place. The race was won by Preston Harriers, whose anchor-leg runner clocked the fastest time of the day in 9:44.
