2018 WYXC League, Race 1

Sunday 21st October, Spenborough

With an impressive 31 junior runners from Holmfirth Harriers registered to take part in this year’s West Yorkshire Cross Country League, there was much anticipation for the first race of the series at Spenborough on Sunday 21st October. The Northern Relays having taken place the day before, it was now time for our runners to shift attention to their own individual performances.

The weather was not typical for a cross country race as the sun was shining and the ground was very firm and dry.

Declan Levay wins U11B

First up, as ever at these league races, were the Under 11 boys, where Declan Levay claimed his (and the club’s) first win of the season with a fantastic display of cross country running. With Callum Noble in an impressive 22nd position and Luke Hirst and Alexander Gilligan in 57th and 59th, respectively, this was a great start to the league.

Due to the age rules relating to Under 11s in the West Yorkshire league, our two youngest female league athletes, Emily Wood and Beth Cannon, are competing in this year’s Under 13 girls category; both girls held their own against some considerably older runners. However, the best performance in this race went to Imogen Wolff, who backed up her tremendous individual performance in the previous day’s Northern Relays with another win. In total, the club fielded ten runners in the Under 13 girls race, with Beth’s older sister Katie Cannon the second highest placed club runner (24th) and a group of Harriers battling it out for top 30 positions: Alice Feetham (28th) Tilda Turner (29th) Libby Pringle (30th ) and Annie McLean (33rd). Zara Farrow (50th) and Elizabeth Gilligan (55th) completed the list of club runners in this age group.

Harry Gilligan was the best of the Under 13 boys, finishing in 23rd place, with Jack Sunderland close behind (26th) and Lucas Hall a little further back (68th).

In the Under 15 girls race, Elena Inch gave a great performance to finish in 6th place in her first year in this age group. Mollie Scaramuzza (22nd) and Lauren Hirst (36th) also impressed.

An excellent performance from all four Harriers in the Under 17 girls race saw the girls claim first team position. Zara Tyas crossed the line in a superb third place, a performance backed up by club mates Olivia Dyson (7th), Sophie Kettlewell (9th) and Lydia Throssell (15th).

One race down and Holmfirth Harriers have two individual and one team first placings – looks like it could be a good season for the juniors.

It was a very busy weekend for the senior athletes, with four races available to choose from, but they still managed a good turnout at Spenborough.  The previous day had seen the British Hill & Fell Relay Championships in Grasmere, where four Holmfirth teams competed, and the morning of the cross country saw the club host the Holmfirth 15 mile and 10k races from Holmfirth High School.

The senior women, who have won this league many times in previous yearse, got off to a good start with second place behind  York Knavesmire.  Helen Berry led the team home on the 5.3km course in 3rd place and 1st W40 (20:31), with Claire Leaver-Hewitt in 8th (22:04). Juliette Brandford, made a successful leap up to senior level, coming home in 19th place and 2nd  U20 (22:58).  Kath Farquhar, racing her way back to fitness, was pleasantly surprised to complete the team in 33rd place and 3rd W45 (23:54).

Other Holmfirth women’s results: 45th & 1st W60 Lesley Ewart (24:49), 61st Debbie Hall (25:29), 110th Ann Smith (36:23).

The Senior Men’s race of approx. 9km was dominated by Leeds City athlete Graham Rush who won in a time of 29.10. Some of Holmfirth’s more senior athletes were absent for this race but the younger members stepped up and produced some excellent performances. First back was Lewis Byram who battled strongly to finish 12th (31.02). He was closely followed by Aaron Kettlewell who also ran well for 14th (31.17). They were backed up by Alex Robinson in 22nd (32.00) and Kai Sunman in 25th (32.13). After running the day before in the Northern Cross Country Relays, Steve Green ran a good race to finish in 34th (32.50). The final runner to count, and securing second place for the team, was Tim Street in 47th (33.52).

Other Holmfirth placings were: 48th Luke White (33.56), 72nd Fionn Kerry (35.21), 101st Neil Thornton (38.58), 102nd Jonny Sykes (38.59), 105th Jonathan Bray (38.12), 120th Chris Beadle (39.40), 135th Steve Berridge  (40.52), 150th Simon Barrans (42.30) & 160th Jason Haigh (43.50).
