West Yorkshire XC League - Race 3 Report

Jack Sunderland and Declan Levay in U11 boys

Declan Levay in U11 boys

Junior athletes from Harriers excelled in sunny cold conditions at Spenborough on Sunday in the 3rd West Yorkshire Cross Country meeting on Sunday. The undulating terrain and relatively firm conditions seemed to suit the Holmfirth athletes which lead to the team and individual successes in several of the age group races.

The first race of the day the U11 boys really set the standard. Declan Levay still with another year in this age group had a fabulous run to finish in 4th position, Jack Sunderland was only seconds behind in 13th matching his position from the previous race and Tom Fraine came through the field to finish in 19th. These 3 team counters were backed up by Jamie Stewart in 24th and Harry Gilligan 30th. The boys' team finished in 2nd position in the team and are in contention for medals for the league depending on their performance in the final race in 3 weeks time in Keighley.

The turnout was equally impressive in the U13 girls' race. First back for the club was Isabel Richardson but only after a real battle for this third spot with teammate Imogen Wolff who was just pipped for third place by Holly Brewster of Longwood only 3 seconds separated the girls. Birthday girl Elena Inch was only a few places back in 9th place and the girls clinched 1st place in the team standings with ease. Backing up these three team counters were youngsters Annie McLean 46th, Libby Pringle 54th, Zara Earnshaw 63rd, Zara Farrow 64th and Elizabeth Gilligan 68th all of whom are like Imogen in their first year in this age group. With Kristian Green missing this race Callum McFarlane was the sole representative in the U13 boys' race. Calum had a really strong run improving on his position from the last race by 10 places.

There were strong performances for Holmfirth girls in both of the older age groups. The U15s girls were lead home by Zara Tyas who after a fast start finished well up the field in 12th position with Olivia Dyson working her way through the field to finish close on Zara’s heels in 14th. Sophie Kettlewell was once again 3rd counter for the team finishing strongly in 25th and Mollie Scaramuzza was not far behind her in 28th place. Lydia Throssel and Amelie Stewart in 41st and 45th places competed the Holmfirth contingent. The team finished on equal points with Ilkley for third place but were given 4th place as their cumulative time was slower. The U17 women once again finished 1st team after strong runs from Juliette Branford 6th, Cara Inch 10th Annie Stone 12th and Alice Shelbourne 16th. They only need to field a team in the last race to be assured of league gold medals.

The senior women had a very tight race for the team points and were just three points short of taking the top spot. They packed well with the first three comfortably in the top ten. Helen Berry led the team home in 3rd place and 1st W40 (20:04), after a well fought battle and being outsprinted in the final 50 metres. Ruby Sykes put in a strong performance in 5th (20:36), as did Claire Leaver-Hewitt not far behind in 8th (20:55). Kath Farquhar, who had an unlucky start and was boxed in for much of the first lap, did her best to work through the field and complete the team in 28th place and 3rd W45 (22:36). The final race in the series at Keighley on 9th December will prove critical to the team result, which is currently a race between Holmfirth and City of York.

Other Holmfirth women’s results: 38th Helena Croft (22:56), 55th & 1st W60 Lesley Ewart (24:23), 59th Lizzie Deacon (24:38), 124th Ann Smith (35:49).

A good turnout of athletes ensured that Holmfirth’s senior men improved their result on the previous two races by a place to second. They were once again led by Junior athlete Aaron Kettlewell, 3rd & 2nd U20 (30.05), who has consistently raced well throughout the season. Alex Robinson, another strong Junior, performed well for 14th (31.26). Stu Sharp, who has been in and out of form through illness & injury also ran strongly for 21st & 2nd M35 (32.10). In his first year racing with the seniors, Harry Shelbourne showed good strength to hold off some of his rivals to finish in

25th (32.47). Completing the team were veteran Steve Green in 29th & 3rd M45 (33.00) closely followed by another junior Lavell Pierre in 33rd (33.08).
