English Cross Country Relay Championships

Kristian cruises home

Berryhill Park, Mansfield, Saturday 4th November

Kristian Green

The Saucony English Cross Country Relay Championships was held in Berry Hill Park in Mansfield last Saturday, on an undulating and spectator-friendly course.  Attracting all standards of athlete, from grassroots to the elite, runners get to compete alongside international athletes.  Over 1,273 teams were entered across the 10 races of the day

A small contingent of Holmfirth Harriers junior athletes made the trip across to Mansfield to take part in the National cross country relay championships at Berry Hill Park.

In the U13 boys race Kristian Green once again showed what fine form he is in with a superb run on leg one. Kristian was with the pace right from the gun and on the wooded section of the course moved through in to third place. This he managed to hold on to, even challenging for the second spot on the long run in to the finish. Kristian’s time of 6.53 was third fastest time of the day across all the three legs of the relay,  which is a wonderful achievement in a National Championship.

The U20 women’s trio had the result of the day with an excellent 6th place.  Olivia Sykes has been running well all season, but struggled with the onset of a leg injury, coming home in 16th place on the first leg in 9:13 which was still a very good time.  The Byram sisters, Lucy and Erica, put in fine performances to bring their team up to 9th in 9:27 on leg two and all the way to 6th in 9:36 on leg 3.

The senior women managed to field three teams; the maximum number allowed in this national event.  The A team put in a fine performance to finish 23rd amongst many international athletes.  With some athletes favouring the Leeds Abbey Dash 10km the following day, the men’s teams were not at full strength, however they fielded two teams, with a number of the club’s star sprinters in the B team, which was great to see.
