Inter Counties Cross Country Championships

Cofton Park, Birmingham, Saturday 12th March

An invitation-only event, athletes are selected from the County Championships held back in January and Holmfirth Harriers had 8 athletes representing Yorkshire this year.  This is often the penultimate, if not final, domestic cross country event of the season for most athletes.

Cofton Park is a great venue from both a competitor’s and spectator’s point of view; undulating, a couple of hills and some fast, flat running. The ground was firm for most of the course and the weather was sunny and dry with only a slight breeze.

Yorkshire is one of the strongest counties in the country and often takes home many team medals from this event.  This year was no different.

In the U17 women’s race Olivia Sykes, who has been on great form of late, worked through the field to finish an excellent 22nd (3rd Yorkshire team counter) in 21.07 out of 267 runners. Olivia’s performance helped Yorkshire to 4th team place. Erica Byram ran well to finish in the top half of the race finishing in a time of 23.10 in 117th place.

In the U17 men’s race we had Seth Waterman competing. Seth ran a time of 20.44 within 2 minutes of the winner finishing 79th of 250 runners and 5th home for the Yorkshire team.

In the U20 women’s race Lucy Farquhar, who travelled up from her first year at Oxford Uni, had a daunting start being first out of the pen for Yorkshire after her excellent performance at the County Champs in January. She ran strongly to finish 4th counter, placing 43rd of 164 runners. The team finished 11th out of 21 teams.

The U20 men’s race saw Chris Law and Alex Robinson compete in their first year in the U20 category. Their race, like all the others was a very fast start out of the pens, bottle-necking on the first downhill section, before the gradual climb saw the athletes settle into a more even pace. Chris finished 43rd of 164 runners and 5th for Yorkshire in 29.53 with Alex not far behind being 7th for Yorkshire coming 68th overall in 30.40, Yorkshire’s first 4 counters gained them Gold medal position out of 24 teams.

In the senior women’s race Katie Walshaw and Helen Berry competed in their usual style with Katie going hard from the gun running hard to try and stay towards the front with Helen allowing the race to settle as she worked through the other runners. The Yorkshire athletes packed very well, with 4th, 10th and 12th and with their next 3 counters in the top 40, the women secured Team Gold. Katie was part of this team as 5th counter finishing 28th in 32.04 with Helen only 50 seconds behind in 53rd place, but unfortunately out of the team counters, being 8th for Yorkshire.

Well done to everyone a great day of racing and thanks to the supporters who travelled with the athletes!
