Yorkshire County Cross Country Championships

Lightwater Valley, Ripon, Saturday 9th January

Once again Lightwater Valley hosted the 2016 Yorkshire Cross Country Championships. Not only were Individual and Team medals on offer but the first eight athletes in each race would be chosen to represent Yorkshire in the Inter Counties Cross Country Championships in March.

With the weather being so wet over the last month the course was quite muddy and fairly well chewed up in parts by the time the Women’s race set off over a 3.5-lap, 7800m course.  The Under 20 women set off with the Seniors, but for the first time in this event ran one lap less, in line with the distances of the Inter-Counties Championships in March.  The only representative from Holmfirth was Lucy Farquhar who had a great run to finish in individual silver medal position and automatically qualifying for the Yorkshire team.

In the Senior race, Katie Walshaw was to the fore from the off, challenging Leeds City athletes Claire Duck and marathon international Susan Partridge.  Katie finished in bronze medal position.  Helen Berry made a steady start within the top 15 or so, decisively making a move up the field with more than a lap to go from 11th to finish in 7th place which was good enough for her to join Katie in the Yorkshire team selection.  With strong runs from Claire Leaver-Hewitt in 28th and Ruby Sykes close behind in 34th, the Holmfirth women secured team silver medals behind the ever dominant Rotherham Harriers.

Holmfirth’s ‘B’ team finished 13th, led by Margaret Sykes enjoying a successful return to racing.

The Junior Men’s race covered the same course as the women and  Holmfirth had a few athletes who were hopeful of a Yorkshire vest one being Chris Law who has run well all season and, once again, had a fine performance to finish in 5th (31.12). Alex Robinson showed that his hard work in training has paid off with a tremendous 7th place (32.27) and his first Yorkshire vest. Suffering from the effects of a cold, Kai Sunman was next home in 11th (33.00) and this secured a well deserved team victory. Also having good runs were Aaron Kettlewell in 12th (33.23) and Eddie Hinchliffe in 19th (37.25).

The Senior Men’s race consisted of 1 small & 4 large laps, a distance of approx. 10km. The overall winner was Jonathan Thewlis in a time of 37.09. Veteran Dave Watson ran well to finish in 23rd (39.42), next home and also running well was Dan Shaw in 97th (44.55), Rick Sunman was 146th (47.32) closely followed by Garreth Humphries in 148th (47.35). The final two team places were battled out between Chris Beadle in 152nd (47.49) and Mark Law in 154th (47.55) which resulted in 15th place. Other Holmfirth placings were, Dean Clark 170th (49.11), Robert Hinchliffe-Smith 172nd (49.19), Andy Hauser 206th (51.58), Rob Kersey 217th (52.56), Simon Barrans 220th (53.23), Matthew Rose 232nd (55.42) & Robert Robinson 239th (56.04)
