West Yorkshire Cross Country League final race

West Yorkshire XC League, Nunroyd Park, Guiseley, Sunday 6th Dec

The final meeting of the West Yorkshire cross country league held Last Saturday at Nunroyd Park in Guisley concluded a successful campaign for the Holmfirth contingent. Despite the wet underfoot conditions the clubs athletes were out in force and secured league medals and trophies in junior and senior categories. In all the club won team medals in 5 out of the ten races, winning gold in the U17 women in addition there were individual medals in junior, senior and veteran age categories.

In the youngest age group U11s there were fantastic performances on the day in both the girls and boys races. In the boys race Matthew Burke took up the early pace and lead the race for the first part of the course, as the muddy underfoot conditions took their toll  Kristian Green came through the field to finish in second place with Matthew in an excellent fifth. Both boys won individual trophies for the league, Kristian finishing second and Matthew 4th. On the day the boys were supported by Calum McFarlane who run strongly for 40th, the team finished 5th in this very competitive field and finished the league in fifth position.  The girl’s race was also a treat for the Holmfirth supporters. Isabel Richardson put on her usual gutsy performance and lead the race pretty much from the gun to finish first – her third win in the league this year which unsurprisingly secured he first place overall. Elena Inch who had so far improved with every race continued this pattern, setting of at a very sensible place and gradually making her way through the field to follow Isabel home in 4th place. Completing the team was another Isabel, Crowe, who ran consistently and finished in 21st with  Annie McLean and Aoife Kerry both running strongly in 46th and 54th place. The girls finished in second place on the day and  overall finished in third to win bronze medals for the league.

In the u13 age group Francis Keddie was first home for the club in 15th place, Sophie Kettlewell not far behind in 23rd, Lydia Throssel 34th and Ruby Sykes 50th the girls finished 5th team on the day and were 5th team overall. In the boys race at this age group Brandon Kudita was once again first back for the club in 27th with Sean Keddie in 57th.

In her first cross country season Juliet Branford once again ran strongly to finish in 5th place, with Libby Shepherd in 13th, Sunnivah Waterman 19th, Alice Shelbourne 27th and Zoe Oakes 31st. The girls finished fourth team on the day but were second team overall and won well deserved silver medals. Juliet also won a trophy for finishing 5th overall in the league. In the boys race Fionn Kerry had a very strong run to finish in 13th place.

Once again the Holmfirth girls dominated the U17 race. Alice Moore ran from the front once again with Olivia Sykes hot on her heels. The girls  finished in this order first and second , Erica Byram was next team counter in 5th, Lucy Byram 9th, Lizzie Deacon 14th and Ellie Sunman 15th all the girls run brilliantly and came away with well deserved team gold medals and gold and silver individual medals for Alice and Olivia. In the boys race Seth Waterman was his usual consistent self and finished in 5th both on the day and in the league overall. Harry Shelbourne also ran well in 17th.

Women just miss out on Gold!

The final race in the series was critical for Holmfirth’s women, having won 2 of the 3 previous races. A win at Nunroyd Park would mean a tie with Pudsey & Bramley (P&B) on points for the top spot.  With a couple of team members missing; Claire Leaver – now Claire Hewitt – was away on honeymoon, and Helen Berry was out with an injury, it was down to the youngsters to boost the team points.

Katie Walshaw was in the lead from the gun, but despite putting up a good fight couldn’t hold off eventual winner Alex Bell of P&B and second placed Claire Duck of Leeds City.  Lucy Farquhar, who had just returned home from her first term at Oxford University, Jordan Mullinger and Ruby Sykes all made a good start near the front of the field, but the pace and mud proved a little too much.  Meanwhile club Coach Kath Farquhar – who made a late decision to take part - had a storming run, gradually overtaking the trio and finishing 2nd team counter.  Jordan and Lucy made up the team with crucial points to beat P&B by just 2 points.  Despite that giving Holmfirth 3 wins out of 4, their equal points score with P&B forced a count-back system, which is done on the team score for each race and P&B were awarded the league title being 20 points clear.  Kath Farquhar won the V45 Gold for the league.  Lesley Ewart won the V60 category and Yvette Arthur was 3rd V50.  Katie took silver in the open category.

Silver for Holmfirth’s men too

This course is notorious for its muddy patches and, with the rain that has come down lately, it didn’t disappoint. Holmfirth’s senior men went into this race needing a big win if they were to challenge for the series victory. At the start of the four lap race it was Tom Adams (Ilkley), looking for his third victory, and Simon Deakin (Leeds City) who went to the front. These two dominated the race with Deakin edging away in the closing stages to claim the win. It was one of the junior athlete’s, Chris Law, who was making the challenge for Holmfirth eventually finishing in a fantastic 5th place & 1st U20 (32.12) followed by the ever present Dave Watson in 8th & 1st M45 (32.37). Making his return from injury was Kai Sunman who ran well to finish in 13th (33.17). Next home, having a strong run, was Alex Robinson in 20th (33.56). The last two counters for the team were Joe Law in 31st (34.47) and Dan Shaw in 57th (36.42). These results ensured Holmfirth claimed the team win on the day, unfortunately it wasn’t enough for the series victory which was awarded to Wharfedale Harriers. Other Harrier placings were: 63rd Darren Hanson (37.06 & 1st M50), 80th Gary Graham (38.08), 86th Mark Law (38.33), 87th Chris Beadle (38.36), 89th Garreth Humphries (38.39), 102nd Eddie Hinchliffe (39.42), 104th Clark Hind (39.52), 110th Wayne Byram (41.03), 117th Rob Kersey (41.46 & 1st M60), 119th Simon Barrans (42.13), 124th Kevin Yewlett (43.13 & 2nd M60), 126th Matthew Rose (43.41), 135th Juan Biurrun (45.51), 139th Jason Haigh (47.02), 141st David Milton (48.06) & 147th Tim Cock (53.31 & 2nd M70)
