West Yorkshire Cross Country League, Race 2

Sunday 27th October, Nunroyd Park, Guiseley

The second in the four-race series took place at Nunroyd Park in Guiseley. With all the recent rain it was the usual mud-fest, making tough going for the athletes.

The sun certainly shone on Holmfirth though, with some great individual and team performances.
Half term perhaps meant fewer juniors than normal. In the U11 Boys Alexander Gilligan was the sole representative in 46th place. Emily Twigg had a great run to finish 9th in the U11 Girls, with team-mate Florence Jones in 27th.

Jack Sunderland and Harry Gilligan ran well in the U13 Boys in 5th and 14th respectively, but unfortunately didn’t have a third member to score a team result. Similarly in the U13 Girls, there was no complete team for Holmfirth, but super efforts from Alice Fleetham in 28th and Jessica Trafford in 39th.

Kristian Green continued his good form to win the U15 Boys race by 9 seconds. Team-mate Rory Bryant ran very well in 9th. Unfortunately there was no third team counter to back up these two excellent performances. The U15 Girls had Elena Inch leading the team in excellent 8th, and backed up by Elizabeth Gilligan in 36th and Lauren Hirst in 38th, the team finished in 7th place.

Whilst there were no representatives in the U17 Boys race, the Girls race proved very exciting for Holmfirth. Zara Tyas made a strong start, in the leading few, then settled in to the race whilst Olivia Dyson worked through to finish 3rd, with Zara in 5th. Backed up by Lydia Throssell in 12th, the team had a convincing win.

Now the turn of the seniors to take on the muddy circuit. The women’s race unfolded over 3 laps, with the Holmfirth team working well at the front. Katie Walshaw and Julia Jagger headed out at full speed, tiring out any chasers. Katie held the lead after the first lap and finished to win by 49 seconds. Meanwhile, Ruby Sykes had paced the race well and pushed to the end, to cross the line in 2nd. Helen Berry took a lap or two to make any headway at the front, but her solid performance meant a 1-2-3 for Holmfirth. Julia tired later in the race, but still put in a solid performance in 6th to secure the winning team result by a significant margin over Knavesmire. Claire Leaver-Hewitt wasn’t far behind in 12th, and Maggie Sykes 24th and Lucy Farquhar in 50th completed the club’s results for this race.

For the Senior Men it was déjà vu as, once again suffering from the absence of key athletes, they managed to replicate the 8th team place that they achieved in the first race of the series at Keighley. David Cross led the way for with a strong run to finish in 48th (38.58). Battling together for most of the race were Chris Taylor in 55th (39.48) and Jonny Sykes in 58th & 2nd M55 (39.54). Next home, and winning his M50 age group, was Gary Graham in 73rd (40.54). The final two counters for the team were Jake Harman 78th (41.13) and Sean McCaffrey in 80th (41.30).
Other Holmfirth placings were; 82nd Mark Law (41.59), 123rd & 1st M65 Rob Kersey (45.27), 128th Shaun Coggon (46.44), 133rd Jonathan Bray (47.14), 134th Jason Haigh (47.58) & 153rd Mark Henderson (60.28)
