2018 WYXC League, Race 4

Saturday 8th December, Keighley

Holmfirth Harriers travelled to a very wet and muddy Cliffe Castle in Keighley for the fourth and final race in the West Yorkshire Cross Country League. This race would be the decider for many of the team results, so every place counted!

The U11 Boys started the day with a great run from Declan Levay in 2nd place. He was backed up by Samuel Allot in 42nd, Luke Hirst in 49th and Alexander Gilligan in 50th. In the U13 Girls race Imogen Wolff demonstrated her talent by racing away from her rivals on the last lap to finish well clear of her rivals in 1st. Her two team mates were Alice Feetham in 21st and Elizabeth Gilligan in 47th. In the U15 Girls it was Elena Inch who led the Harriers by coming home in 8th place followed by Mollie Scaramuzza in 28th. The U17 Women continued their good form with Zara Tyas in 4th, Olivia Dyson in 7th, Sophie Kettlewell in 14th and Lydia Throssell in 18th claiming 2nd Team on the day and 1st Team in the series. Series Individual awards went to Declan Levay (2nd U11 Boys), Imogen Wolff (1st U13 Girls) & Zara Tyas (3rd U17 Women).

senior women wycc race 4 keighley 2018The senior women’s race, run over a very slippery and challenging 5.3km, was dominated by the amber vests at the front of the field. Ruby Sykes continued her excellent form and finished an impressive 3rd (19:53). The Byram sisters, Erica and Lucy, in their first cross country race of the season, worked well together within the top ten, finishing 5th & 1st U20 (20:13) and 7th & 2nd U20 (20:33) respectively. Helen Berry, racing back to fitness after a short break for an operation, worked through the field to finish between her team mates in 6th & 1st V40 (20:25). The trio gave great support to Ruby, securing a team win; their first of the league, and by a huge margin of 21 points to York Knavesmire’s 65. The overall Holmfirth team placing remained unchanged though, at second behind the North Yorkshire club.

Cara Inch ran consistently well, coming home in 13th and 3rd U20 (21:32). With Claire Leaver-Hewitt not far behind in 17th (21:57) and youngster Juliette Branford in 27th (22:29), Lesley Ewart was the final Holmfirth woman home in an impressive 49th & 1st V60 (24:58). These performances would have put them in fourth team place if ‘B’ teams were recognised, demonstrating the strength in depth of the club.

The overall league results saw medal positions for Claire Leaver-Hewitt (2nd V35), Helen Berry (1st V40), Kath Farquhar (3rd V45) and Lesley Ewart (1st V60). Ruby Sykes narrowly missed out on a bronze in the open category competition, by just one point.

From left to right Erica Byram, Lucy Byram, Ruby Sykes, Helen Berry, Claire Leaver-Hewitt, Cara Inch, Juliette Branford & Lesley EwartHolmfirth’s senior men, due to illness, injury and other engagements, started the race seriously under strength and although there were some good performances it wasn’t enough to earn a team place on the day or in the series. Kai Sunman was the first home for the Harriers having a solid run in 25th (28.23). Tim Street closely followed in 29th (28.48). Lavell Pierre ran well for 52nd (30.51) while Chris Beadle came 63rd (31.19). Battling it out for the last two team counters were Jonny Sykes and Chris Taylor with Sykes just edging it in 70th & 1st M55 (31.57) and Taylor in 71st (32.01). This result gained 6th team on the day and 4th in the series. Other Holmfirth placings were: Andy Shelbourne 76th (32.16), Damo McQueen 81st (32.30), Neil Thornton 90th (33.10), Steve Berridge 96th & 3rd M55 (33.27), Wayne Byram 99th (33.51), Gary Graham 102nd (34.09), Mark Law 108th (34.41) & Rob Kersey 133rd & 2nd M65 (38.29).

Series medal positions went to Aaron Kettlewell (3rd SM) & Jonny Sykes (3rd M55)
