Yorkshire County Athletics Road Relay Championships

The Brownlee Centre at Bodington Park in Leeds, which was transformed last year thanks to a £5M investment, was host to the Yorkshire Road Relay championships last weekend where Holmfirth Harriers had a number a teams competing.

The relay race course was held at the purpose-built triathlon training centre (the UK’s first), over the ‘Bodington Cycle circuit’ which is a mile loop.

Senior ladies start

As with the Northern Athletics relays a fortnight previously, an event was also held first for the juniors over two laps. Kristian Green had a great race in the U13 boys’ 2 mile event to take a silver medal in 11:25. He was backed up by Jack Sunderland (23rd 13:22) and Lucas Hall (34th 17:56) to give the boys fourth team.

Holmfirth’s Under 15 girls took home bronze medals, which was a great achievement behind big city clubs of Hallamshire and Wakefield. The girls packed well, with Zara Tyas in 10th (13:00), Olivia Dyson in 11th (13:12) and Sophie Kettlewell in 16th (13:26).

The women’s event was held over the same two lap (2 miles). Holmfirth had two teams entered in the 4-stage event and stood a good chance of medals. Ruby Sykes led the ‘A’ team off and paced herself well, ignoring the temptation to keep with the eventual stage winner, Alice Moore of Barnsley AC, who set off incredibly quickly before settling in. Ruby gained on her on the second lap, finishing just 9 seconds behind (11:45). Jordan Mullinger, for the ‘B’ team kept the amber vests to the fore, having an excellent race in 5th place (12:18).

Ruby Sykes, Lucy Byram, Erica Byram, Maggie Sykes

Triathlete Lucy Byram, who trains regularly on this course with her sister, Erica, overtook the Barnsley athlete on the second leg (11:57). Erica fought hard on leg 3 (12:05) but Wakefield were gaining and eventually took the lead. Veteran Margaret Sykes, regaining her fitness, put in a solid performance to bring the team home in silver medal position (12:48). With GB international, Charlene Thomas of Wakefield & District AC on the final leg, the winners were triumphant by a margin of over 2 minutes. Barnsley AC took Bronze, nearly 3 minutes behind Holmfirth.

Senior men start

The ‘B’ team finished 12th out of 23 complete teams; Jordan Mullinger 5th 12:18, Debbie Hall 8th 13:45, Lucy Verrill 7th 13:50 and Sophie Cromwell 12th (15:49).

Ted Chamberlain

The senior men’s race was over three laps, down as 4.8k, however most of our athletes had it as 5k. With six teams out of a total of thirty eight, Holmfirth certainly made their presence felt. As with the ladies, the men’s race was over four stages. Unfortunately, unlike the ladies, the men couldn’t quite get amongst the medals, the ‘A’ team finishing less than a minute behind third placed Hallamshire in fourth place.

First off was Aaron Kettlewell, running Holmfirth’s fastest time of the day, 15.27, a sprint over the last 200m bringing into fourth place. Alex Robinson on two ran a creditable 16.03 but losing one place to fifth. Third leg runner, eighteen year old Ted Chamberlain, going really well at the moment, ran a blinder in 15.55 to pull us back up to fourth. Drafted into the ‘A’ team due to someone else’s injury, last leg man Lavelle Pierre did well to hold fourth place.

The ‘B’ team ran well to finish eleventh. Veteran Dave Watson chasing the younger runners on the first leg to finish ninth in 16.09. Stu Sharp, tenth, 17.10. Steve Green, ninth, 16.27. Clark Hind, eleventh, 16.52 completed the team.
