Huddersfield 10K, 2018

25th February 2018

Debbie Beck reports:

Another cold February morning in Huddersfield with warnings of freezing temperatures leading up to this year’s Huddersfield 10K. The 3rd race in the club championships, thankfully we were presented with a cold morning, lovely blue skies and a big sun shining over Huddersfield - perfect running conditions for an undulating (Yorkshire Style) 10K.

A very short trip for most of the Holmfirth Harriers to race HQ at Lockwood Rugby Club. I arrived in plenty of time to collect my race number, 666 which made me giggle, before meeating up with some team members, Helen Pettit, Jon & Becky Burdon. After meeting up with more Holmfirth Harriers we headed out for a very little warm up.

A great turnout of Holmfirth Harriers we had 8 ladies and 18 men on the start line with our youngest being 16, Fionn Kerry.

11.00am came around and we were off with a few marshals saying “enjoy your nice flat course”; of course we know it’s not. The course headed out of the Rugby Club turning left under the viaduct and up and up hills towards Netherton Village, heading up to Healey House, then a left turn to get some downhill, and a chance to pick your pace up until the next couple of hills up Lea Lane and onto Moor Lane. Some more downhill into Armitage Bridge with a sneaky short hill up Carriage Drive then onto the main Woodhead Road back to the Rugby club for sprint finish down Brewery Drive. Even though I couldn’t speak much after powering down to the finish line I once again enjoyed my race and still had a smile.

There were some great performances from our team Holmfirth and the feedback on the race was very positive. We had notable performances from Fionn Kerry 2nd place and Maggie Sykes 4th lady.  Holmfirth gained team prizes for 1st Men’s team (Fionn Kerry, Edward Pritchard, John Levick), 3rd Men’s team (Jacob Harman, Richard Wheeler, Jon Burdon) and 2nd Female team (Maggie Sykes, Helen Pettit, Debbie Beck).
