Kai Sunman, 1st for Holmfirth in 32:07

10 brave Harriers battled their way into deepest Lancashire to place themselves on starting line for final race of the summer road championship. We had arrived in Clitheroe have driven through some very murky weather over the Pennines. We were part of an over 1200 strong band of starters which included runners from all over the country. Conditions were cool, almost windless, ideal for road race.

The course, a well established meander around country lanes near Clitheroe, proved to have few terrors for Harriers. It ambled gently up and down throughout its 6.2 miles never steep enough to slow you up on the ascents nor descending enough to provide a much faster descent pace. A real peach of a course.

Kai Sunman was first back in a hugely respectable 32.07 and was followed in by the rest of us with Andrew Clarke and Adrian Taylor bringing up the rear both got round in just over the hour. Jane Stirling narrowly beat Nicky Ottaway to be our first woman back both got round in under 49 minutes. Damian McQueen cruised around in under 38 minutes and Rob Kersey in under 44 minutes. As for me I got round in a satisfying 49 minutes with Bob Ford, one of our very recent new members in under 54 minutes. Our recent antipodean returnee, Michael Hall, was delighted with his 55 minute finish.

A special mention also ought to go my long suffering running mate, Keith Ross of Kingston upon Hull AC, whom I persuaded to run in this race all the way from Hessle, he managed a satisfying 51.29. Keith and myself have been racing together for over 30 years.

A race that many Harriers would enjoy tackling in the future.
