A relaxed yet determined Mark

On Sunday 20 October 2019 Holmfirth Harriers Elite Triathletes, Mark Buckingham and Lucy Hall enjoyed success in Yorkshire and Beijing.

Mark Buckingham a member of the Club since the age of 6 years returned to his running roots, when he tackled his first marathon, the Yorkshire Marathon. He felt in good shape after helping his training partner, Olympic Champion, Alistair Brownlee prepare for both the World Half Ironman Championships in Nice and the World Ironman Championships in Kona. However, he hadn’t done any specific marathon preparation and after being given the opportunity to race the previous day, he decided to target a time of 2 hours 22 minutes.

The race started and finished on the York University campus and after heading to the historic city centre passing the Minster, the course went towards Heworth Green, on a circular route through the picturesque village of Stockton on the Forest, and along pleasant rural roads as far as Stamford Bridge, returning through Dunnington, Murton and finally through Osbaldwick village before joining Hull Road towards the finish. Mark set-off at a brisk pace, slightly quicker than his target pace and led the field for most of the race. He went through 10km in 33 minutes, 20km in 1.06.26 and the half marathon in 1.10.31. When he was seen at various locations, he looked relaxed and was on target to reach his goal, but never having raced the distance wondered if he might suddenly “hit the wall”! At 30km (1.40.28) he was still running well and for the last 30 minutes he joined the masses of 10 mile runners on the same course, who were marshalled to one side of the road to allow the faster marathon runners a clear passage. He went through 40km in 2.14.06 and completed the 26.2 mile course in 2.21.42 to finish in 1st place, over three minutes ahead of 2nd placed Daniel Kestrel 2.24.47 and 3rd man, Richard McDowell (2.25.00)

Lucy Hall travelled to China and contested the Beijing International Triathlon Olympic distance the same day. After initially leading the swim, she was overtaken by former World Champion Flora Duffy of Bermuda. Flora completed the swim course in 17.01, with Lucy just 2 seconds behind her and Natalie Van Coevorden only a couple of seconds adrift. The route to Transition was much longer than normal, about 1300m and athletes were allowed to leave shoes near the swim exit to run to T1. Lucy decided to run barefoot and as a result was first to leave T1 on the bike course. Flora Duffy caught her on the first big climb and the two athletes worked together for the next hour increasing their lead to 4 minutes by the time they arrived in T2. Flora Duffy went on to win the race in 2.04.55, with Lucy clinching 2nd place in 2.06.53 and 3rd place went to Non Stanford (2.08.44) who recorded the fastest time for the 10k run of 38.30.
