11 of the 14 Harriers racing the Humber Half

Phil Hanson, June 30, 2019

14 Holmfirth Harriers arrived at the start line for the 20th Anniversary running of the Humber Bridge Half Marathon and were part of a 2000 strong race entry. Our 14 athletes offered a really good cross section of our current half marathon running ability. The weather was sunny but there was a good breeze so running across the bridge twice in 13.1 miles was a real joy.

Three Harriers were running their very first half marathons, they were Mirjam Creeser who was actually running her very first open race crossed the line in 2 hours 37,  Viki Clarke 2 hours 43, and Tracey Courtney 2 hours 50. I have been involved in  training  these three runners and know how much effort and determination these three great women have put into their training. I was very privileged to share their joy as they each crossed the finishing line. As a seasoned half marathon run it is easy to forget the emotional release of achieving a running first. They have done absolutely brilliantly.

For the record Kevin Dessoy was the first Harrier back in 1 hour 38.35 and took the V55 age group category, much to his surprise. Great effort and well done to Kevin. Paul Girdlestone and Robert Dickinson both managed sub 1 hour 45 minutes times, Jon Burdon came in under 1 hour 50, and  just look at his flying photo.  Naomi Shields managed  an under 1 hour 55 finish, and a real scrap on the line saw Michael Watson just pip Phil Hanson at the post by 4 seconds. Phil had spent the previous downhill mile reeling him in. Great final sprint by Michael, both managed 1 hour 55 minutes finishes. Debbie Beck finished in 2 hours 11 minutes, although not at her fastest still managed a very good time just ahead of Becky Burdon in 2 hours 12, on her heels was Alison Smith in 2 hours 15. A late decider to run was Bill Hunter who crossed the line in 2 hours 33.

A group meal in the Humber Country Club Pub, rounded off  a good race in our  Road Championship  this year. Great racing by all well done.
