Darwen Heritage Half Marathon

Sunday 7th April had plenty of racing on the roads and a group of Harriers headed over the hill into Lancashire for the 4th running of the Darwen Heritage Half Marathon.

This was recommended by Michael Hall, who has run the race a couple of times prior to the 2019 event. This low-key race is put on by Darwen Dashers. The road with the race start/finish was closed for the morning and the rest of the course is on quiet country roads. The race HQ was a large sports hall with plenty of parking and space to get ready for the race.

Only a short drive over for the start of the race at 09:30. We were treated to good running conditions on the day; overcast, dry and very little wind.

The course is a hilly one, for a road race, with around 1,300ft of elevation gain. The start is uphill with runners climbing for the first couple of miles. The route levels off and then from 4 miles it is all downhill to the halfway point.

The second half of the race was certainly more challenging than the first. With a few hard miles already in the legs there is a cruel 400ft of climb up to 8 miles, followed by a steep downhill through a village and then an even steeper climb from 9 miles. From here the course gradually keeps ascending until around the 11 mile point where you start to head back towards Darwen.

The last few downhill miles towards the finish are punishing on beat up legs, but great fun to come flying back down to the sports centre and the finish!

There was water and some strange, green fizzy drink on offer at around 5k, 10k, and 15k. Upon crossing the line, we were awarded with a medal (doubling up as a bottle opener) and a bottle of a off beer for the race (hence the bottle opener!) You did also get a tech tee included in your entry fee.

8 Harriers completed the race, results below:

Everyone enjoyed the tough but rewarding course and shout out to Naomi Shields running a PB! Rob Kersey also having a good run finishing 1st V65.

The race was really well organised and I hear improving year on year. One I am sure everyone will recommend.

Well done to all the runners,

The next race on the club road championship is the Holymoorside 10k on Sunday 12 May. It’s an uphill first half then all downhill to the finish! More information here - http://www.holymoorside10k.co.uk/
