National 12 & 6 stage road relays

National 12 & 6 stage road relays. Sutton Park, Sutton Coldfield. 6-4-2019

Holmfirth Harriers sent a men’s and ladies team to the National relays. The men, having qualified at the Northern Athletics Road Relay Championships, were off first at 12.00 on the first of their 12 stages.

The men’s race is run over alternate long and short legs of 5.38 miles and 3.16 miles respectively.

Ted Chamberlain

Ted Chamberlain

First off for the Harriers was student, Chris Law. He was up against some top quality opposition but ran really well to finish 28th. (27.37). On the first short leg was Luke White. It is his first season in the senior ranks and he is showing his worth to the team. After his fine run at the Northern’s he continued to impress with a great run, gaining a place to 27th. (16.50). Aaron Kettlewell was on long leg 3.  He worked hard as usual but slipped to 32nd. (28.35). On leg 4 was Ted Chamberlain. Having been training hard at Exeter University over the winter, he put all his hard work to good use, having a storming run, pulling the team up 6 places to 26th. (16.02).

Steve Green

Veteran Steve Green was next on long leg 5. Having been a winner here with Bingley back in the 90’s, Steve is no stranger to the course. Currently well into his marathon training, and fitter as a consequence, he ran a strong race finishing 29th. (29.44). Leg 6 saw triathlete Sam O Shea on his way. He put in his usual reliable performance. 30th. (17.40). The next few legs didn’t see much movement in position with all our athletes running consistently. Leg 7 Kai Sunman 30th. (29.42). Leg 8. Phil Hewitt. 30th. (18.41). Leg 9. Alex Robinson. 31st. (29.32). Leg 10. Jacob Harman. 31st. (18.30).

Due to time constraints, legs 11 and 12 were mass starts. Clark Hind was on the long leg 11 and slipped back to 35th (32.15), and over 50 vet, Mark Law had the job of bringing the team home in 39th (20.17). Total time 4.45.24.

It was a great team effort as the men were 19 minutes faster than last year, despite, yet again, not having our fastest team out. We always seem to pull a team together though, and are always grateful to the athletes who step in to make up the team.

Olivia Sykes

Once the men’s first leg runners were well on their way, the ladies race started at 12.20. Like the men, they didn’t have a full strength team, but put on their usual good show, with the team having 3 members of the Sykes family running.

Maggies Sykes

Maggie Sykes

The ladies run over 6 legs, with 1 & 4  being the long legs  and over the same distance as the men. The first of the Sykes’s, Ruby, took on leg 1. Up against some top quality athletes she did well to finish 27th. (34.08). Her younger sister Olivia took over on 2. She ran the fastest short leg for the team, pulling back 4 places in the process. 30th. (20.30). Jordan Mullinger, getting back to fitness, ran well on 3 pulling back another 4 places. 26th. (20.50). Long leg 4 saw mum, Margaret Sykes on her way. After a while off from competitive running she showed she is getting back to form with a fine run. 29th. (37.06). Zoe Storr held on to 29th on the penultimate leg (21.21), with Clare Locke capping a fine team performance by gaining 2 places to finish 27th. (21.42). Total time 2.35.41.
