Yorkshire Road Relays 2019

30 March 2019

Following some great performances at the Northern Athletics road relay Championships last weekend, Holmfirth Harriers were in action again a week later at the Yorkshire road relay Championships. Taking place at the Brownlee Centre in Leeds, the race was run over 4 legs, each taking in three laps of the ‘Bodington Cycle circuit’ which is exactly a mile long. It is the longest in the country, designed as part of the purpose-built triathlon training centre facilities.

The senior men got off to a good start with Aaron Kettlewell finishing 6th in 15.04. Triathlete Lewis Byram took over on leg two. A 35-mile bike ride prior to the race didn’t seem to have slowed him much as he stormed through the field to pull back to 2nd place in 15.08.

Aaron Kettlewell runs a strong first leg (15:04)

Kai Sunman ran hard on leg 3 but was up against some stiff opposition from Hallamshire and Richmond & Zetland, slipping back to 4th  place in 15.46. Tim Street, on the last leg, saw any hope of a medal position slip away and found himself in a tight race for 4th place. He ran neck and neck with the Richmond athlete for the 3 laps but was pipped by 1 second at the finish for 5th place in 16.23. Athletes from the B and C teams all ran well to finish 20th & 34th respectively.

B team: 15th Sam O Shea, 16.14; 24th Chris Beadle, 18.16; 20th Clark Hind, 17.02; 20th Jacob Harman, 17.44.
C team: 32nd Lavell Pierre, 17.25; 26th Chris Taylor, 17.35; 34th Mark Law, 19.17; 34th Craig Sheard, 34th 20.07.

The women demonstrated their strength and depth with four teams competing out of the 35, and clocking 4 of the top ten fastest times of the day.  Even with three late drop-outs due to illness, the club had reserves that stepped up to the mark!

Erica Byram

Erica Byram has a flier, increasing Holmfirth's lead on leg 3

The first leg was quite a race between four athletes who pulled away after the first 400 metres.  Helen Berry was in 3rd place with a Richmond & Zetland athlete, until the end of the second loop, when she closed the gap on first and second athletes from Leeds City and Halifax respectively.  A decisive move on the final loop and, leading for part, she fought hard to finish second in 17:33.  Ruby Sykes took over and it wasn’t long before she overtook Leeds City’s runner, finishing well clear in 17:55.  Erica Byram, on her training ground, had a flier on leg 3, extending Holmfirth’s lead even further, in 17:42.   It was just down to Maggie Sykes to hold the position on the final leg.  Despite not intending to race much this year, she had another good run in 19:51 and finished nearly 3 minutes ahead of Richmond & Zetland.

Zoe Storr B Team and Amy Smith C team

Zoe Storr(B) and Amy Smith(C) battle it out

The B and C teams members ran very close times, it was hard to separate them!  There were some great performances in these, and the D team.  Lucy Byram, who had given up her A team place due to illness still had a fantastic run to bring the B team home in 4th place.  Full team results below;

B team: 14th Claire Leaver-Hewitt, 19:51; 12th Zoe Storr, 19:52; 7th Olivia Sykes, 19:08; 4th Lucy Byram, 18:08.
C team: 12th Jordan Mullinger, 19:40; 13th Amy Smith, 20:05; 10th Helena Croft, 19:57; 14th Liz Woodfield, 19:42
D team: 26th Lorraine Smith, 22:18; 25th Jean Shotter, 22:47; 25th Debbie Beck, 24:11, 24th Naomi Shields 22:28

There was a good turnout for the Junior races starting with the first race of the day U13 Girls where

Libby Pringle and Elizabeth Gilligan both ran well finishing 29th and 41st.

The U13 boys team were unlucky not to medal, finishing in 4th place with Declan Levay finishing 10th, Jamie Stewart and Harry Gilligan finishing 21st and 22nd respectively.

Elena Inch had a great race finishing 5th in the U15 girls race with Mollie Scaramuzza finishing in 25th place.

Zara Tyas also had a great race, leading in the U17 ladies race for the first lap but just succumbing to her Hallamshire competitor on the second lap and finishing 2nd, strongly backed up by Olivia Dyson in 3rd and Sophie Kettlewell in 8th place they took the first team medals home with them.

Well done to all the Junior section who all ran very well at this high level of competition.
