Norton 9

Holmfirth (minibus crew) turn out in numbers for the 2nd road championship race of 2019

The second race on the 2019 road racing championship brought us over to the small town of Norton near Askern. The somewhat unusual distance of 9 miles is not frequently seen on the roads, but this race has been running for a number of years and always attracts a good number of runners.

With the race starting at 10:00 a bus full of Harriers set off from Neiley at 8:00 making the hour trip and got parked up in the field across the road from the race HQ. Giving us plenty of time to get numbers, get warmed up, go to the loo and make our way down the road to the start.

Although the weather was due to be stormy in the afternoon, we were lucky to have good conditions in the morning. There were a few breezy sections and a bit of drizzle towards the end, but cool and altogether good for running.

The course is on rural roads and it did not take long from the start to leave Norton and get out on the exposed countryside roads. Going through a couple of other small villages the route was mainly on quiet roads going with fields all around. There were two drinks stations on the course at 5k and 10k.

It was a fairly quick route with a couple of climbs along the way; one around 6 miles to ‘Castle Hill’ (the castle was a bit more grand than the one we are used to but the hill was not!), and then towards the end of mile 7. After this it was a downhill back into the village and to the finish. The finish line was in a grass field where there was plenty of drinks for the runners and t-shirts for all!

21 Harriers completed the race.

Fastest male was Clark Hind 00:57:49 (35th)

Fastest female was Amy Smith 01:03:25 (10th lady). Amy is a relative newcomer to the club and is showing some great promise, clearly benefiting from the hills of Holmfirth!

Mark Owen made a return to racing after a period of absence and hopefully we will see more of him sporting the Amber vest as the year progresses. Neil Dutton had a great run coming in under the hour. Rob Kersey was once again showing he can mix it with the younger folk, having a tussle over the last mile with Matthew Rose and finishing 4th M65.
