Meltham 'Tough' 10K

Holmfirth turn out in numbers for the 1st road championship race of 2019

The first race on the club road championships and somewhat of a local favourite was the Meltham ‘tough’ 10k. Inheriting its ‘tough’ status after a runner was hypothermic one year! Fortunately, there were no reports of medical emergencies this time around.

Jon and Juan battle it out!

With the race in January it is a good opportunity to test your fitness after the holiday season and set things in motion for the year. It is a hilly course with 650ft+ climbing. The race starts from the Meltham sports centre, before climbing up Harrison Lane to Blackmoorfoot Road where the course undulates before a long downhill finish on Slaithwaite Road back into Meltham.

The rain from the previous evening held off and the day was clear and dry but windy. Runners had to battle out the conditions on the exposed Blackmoorfoot Road. The wind chill made for some cold conditions and no wonder the queue for tea and coffee was nearly out the door of the sports centre!

There was a fantastic turnout from the club with 35 of us on the results (25 male, 10 female). Highlights were:

Logan finishing strong

  • 2nd overall Fionn Kerry
  • 1st V50 Darren Hanson
  • Men’s Team Winners – Fionn Kerry, Clark Hind, Darren Hanson
  • Women’s Team Winners - Helena Croft, Naomi Shields, J Thomas

Logan Anderson was running the race for the 10th consecutive time (he must have a drawer full of Meltham AC mementos!) Amy Smith was running her first race as a Holmfirth Harrier.

There are some pictures from the race on Facebook – ‘Andrew Swales Photography’ and the ‘Yorkshire Runner Photos’ page.

Thank you to all the people who came over to support and to Meltham AC for doing an excellent job with the race.

The next race on the championship is the Norton 9 on 03/03/2019, details can be found on the link below:

All the best,
