Denby Dale Travellers 6

Clark Hind reports - 16/12/18

As we sink into winter and closer to Christmas, the 2018 road championships are also drawing to a close. The last race being a local favourite put on by Denby Dale Athletics Club – The Travellers 6. The race has been running for a number of years and named after the pub it used to start and finish at before a relocation. Some of the veteran club members were reminiscing about great runs on the old course.

It’s the time of year when we don’t see the sun often and temperatures drop and snow was forecast the Saturday before the race. The weather gods were wrong about snow but with the footpaths frosting up and gossip of road closures and car crashes we anxiously waited to open the curtains on Sunday morning to see what conditions we would have.

Fortunately, it was a beautiful sunny winter morning. The roads were clear of ice, no rain and no wind. Ideal conditions for a road race in the countryside.

Harriers (most of us) before the race

For the first time ever, the race was sold out before race day. 18 Harriers made the short trip over to Denby Dale for the race, now starting and finishing at the Pie Hall. At 10:30 over 250 runners set off. The race route is advertised as ‘undulating’ and it didn’t disappoint. The first mile climbs, then the second mile climbs, and you start to think “where is the undulation – this is all up!” But around halfway the road becomes more up and down as you complete a loop then start to head back towards Denby Dale.  With lungs and legs burning from pushing up and down on the country lanes, the last mile is a long downhill with a little kick onto the main road and a charge back towards Pie Hall.

6 (and a little) miles with 750ft of climb – a tough race on the road. Not a course for fast times but a challenging and picturesque route. A flat one would be boring, right?! It was good to see follow Harriers, who live local, out on cheerleading duties. Well done to all the club members out running.

Fastest Harrier and 7th overall was Tim Street in 35:58.

Fastest lady and 2nd FV35 was Helen Nuttall in 43:33

Denby Dale do a great job of putting the race on. Everyone seemed to enjoy it, there was free grub and the bar was open in the Pie Hall after the race. Plenty of prizes and a raffle afterwards. For £7 you can’t go wrong.

The always excellent Steve Frith was out snapping pictures here is a link to the full gallery - https://www.flickr.com/photos/153540926@N08/sets/72157703235975361

Steve does this for free but likes to raise money for mountain rescue, so if you take a picture please consider a donation.

A group of us went over to the Forresters Arms for a couple of drinks and some lovely pub grub after the race. Keep an eye out for few more social outings after races next year.

Well-earned pub grub!

The final road championship points are being tallied and ratified and the winners will soon be announced. Plus, stay tuned for the announcement of the road races for next year (the first one is already confirmed as another local favourite – Meltham ‘Tough’ 10k).

Hope everyone enjoys the festive period and a bit of time off.

All the best,
