Barnsley 10K

Barnsley 10K, 25 November 2018

Jon Burdon reports, nine of us turned out for this, the penultimate race in the 2018 Road Championships.  It had been raining heavily all morning, but thankfully the rain more or less stopped for the race itself.  This lead to an interesting cool run with a lot of water underfoot.

The course itself was an undulating route with a few short sharp hills and one more prolonged climb at about mile 4.

Thanks to Norman for taking a great set of photos. These are on the HHAC Flickr stream https://www.flickr.com/photos/hhac/albums/72157703945291354.

498 runners completed the race. There was a good field of competition, with the top 10% of runners running under 40 minutes which was not at all easy with those hills. The race was won by Scott Hinchliffe of Penistone FPR in 33:18 minutes, and Helen Cross of York Tri Club in 37:03. First back from Holmfirth was Jacob Harman in just under 37 minutes – a great performance in the conditions. Debbie Beck was our first lady, in just under 53 mins. Congratulations to Rob Kersey who won his age category.

Holmfirth results: Jacob Harman 00:36:50; Sean Mccaffrey 00:39:36; Jon Burdon 00:42:35; Robert Dickinson 00:46:12; Phil Brown 00:47:05; Rob Kersey (1st M65) 00:47:23; Paul Winn 00:51:03; Debbie Beck 00:52:51; Michael Hall 00:54:34.  Complete results (XLS) http://www.barnsleyac.co.uk/downloads/Barnsley10K_Final_Results_2018.xls

"It was a tough challenging course I thought. The hard rain at the start helped set a good pace.  It was enjoyable as there was a good field always someone to latch onto” – Jacob Harman

Sadly, we heard that the organiser, after putting the race on for 15 years, is stopping so the event may not happen next year. If it does, it is likely to be on a different route.

The last race in the 2018 road championships is the Travellers 6 on the 16th of December. We’re going out for a meal afterwards so please come, run and eat.
