Senior Fell Championship 2017 final standings

The final race in this year’s senior Fell Championship was just a short hop over the Moss to Tintwistle on Sunday 3rd December for the Bill Fox Gravy Pud. The mens competition had boiled down to a two-horse race between last year’s runner-up Dan Stewart and your Fell Captain Phil Hobbs, so barring a catastrophe, it was only going to end one way! Although Tim Street was first back on the day, having a great race to finish 5th overall, Dan duly claimed his prize by finishing 23rd overall and topped the table with 160 points, ahead of Phil Hobbs on 145 points, so many congratulations to him. Commiserations to Mike Fanning, who but for illness on the day of the last long race at Castle Carr in September, might well have scooped the championship, but unfortunately couldn’t qualify as he only completed one long race. There’s always next year, Mike! During the year, we’ve had some 45 taking part, with 7 racing at least 4 times and it was good to see some new faces venturing onto the fells. Hopefully 2018 will tempt even more of you out there!

For the ladies, only Diane Lee made it over to Tintwistle, taking part in her first fell race for a few years – welcome back! In the championship, 12 ladies took part during the year, but only Debbie Hall was able to complete the necessary 7 races, scoring an impressive 97 points, so many congratulations to her - we have a new name on the trophy! No doubt Helen will have something to say about that in 2018?! Again, it was pleasing to see some fell newbies amongst the ladies & we look forward to encouraging more to take part next year.

The calendar for 2018 has already been published, so start planning your diaries! We’re trying to get as many Harriers to take part in these races as possible, particularly the English & British Championship events, so no doubt the magic bus will be pressed into service for some of the longer trips. Don’t forget, first up for seniors & juniors alike is an old favourite, the Stanbury Splash race on Sunday 14th January. It’s always wet & muddy, there’ll be plenty of people taking part (so no danger of getting lost) & there’s nothing too technical, so an ideal way to start your fell-running career! See you there.
