Auld Lang Syne Fell Race 2019

Mark paces himself well for the win

Mark Buckingham had a great finish to 2019 winning the Auld Lang Syne Fell Race. Having taken part in the race once previously in 2014 where he finished a close 2nd to training partner Alistair Brownlee he made a late entry to the 2019 race.

Sharky and fellow triathlete Sam O'Shea, were the only Holmfirth athletes in a field of almost 400, including some less serious contenders in fancy dress. The race started in the quarry bottom of Penistone Hill Country Park and went down the track leading to the Bronte Way and eventually the Bronte Falls. The race featured the puddle-strewn Pennine Way including a tough climb to Top Withins where the swirling mist greeted the runners as they neared the summit of Delf Hill. The route then descended across some swampy ground to rejoin the outward path to the finish outside West End Cricket Club.

Sam O'Shea finishes 37th
after an unfortunate fall

The race started at a brisk pace and soon four athletes, Michael Cayton, Ribble Valley Harriers, Billy Cartwright, Matlock AC, Shane Robinson, Lincoln Wellington and Sam Tosh Rossendale took turns leading the race with Mark Buckingham a little further behind the leading quartet. He managed to stay in contention throughout the race and on the return to the finish Michael Cayton took the lead with Buckingham in close attendance as the other three runners dropped off the pace. At the final stream crossing before a big climb Cayton still had the advantage, but as they reached some firmer ground Buckingham moved into the lead and opened a small gap which he maintained to the finish winning in a time of 40:31, Cayton finished 2nd in 40:44 and Sam Tosh 3rd 41:56. Unfortunately, Sam O’Shea had a bad fall at the final stream crossing and lost a number of places eventually finishing 37th in 50.51. Hattie Archer of Dark Peak was 1st lady 46.19 ahead of Nichola Jackson Ribble Valley 47:05 and Sarah Hodgson Leeds City 3rd 50.20.
