British Hill and Fell Relay Championships

Helen Berry of Holmfirth Harriers has recently been crowned English V40 and V45 Fell Running Champion, to add to the British V40 title that she secured a few months ago.

The English Championship is contested over a series of races, with participants taking their best 4 scores from 6 races, with 3 of those having to be in each distance; short, medium and long. All these races are category ‘A’, which means they average not less than 50 metres climb per kilometre.

This year the races, which span a 6-month season, took place in Shropshire, Cumbria, Yorkshire and the Peak District, with the toughest being the Great Lakes race from the Langdale valley, which covered 13 miles and a gruelling 7000 feet of climb. Blackfell race in Kettlewell in June doubled as the Yorkshire Fell Running Championship where Helen won gold and her teammate Katie Walshaw won bronze. Helen has led the age-group ranks throughout the season, but still had to perform well at the final couple of races to clinch the titles from her close rival, Mel Price of Mercia Fell Runners.

The British Championship is decided over 4 races, one in each home country. Helen won the V40 category in each of the Northern Irish (Mourne Highline), Welsh (Y Moelwyn) and English (Great Lakes) races, but was beaten by just a few seconds at the final race in Scotland, held as part of the Newtonmore Highland Games in August.

In the open competition, Helen finished 5th overall in both the English and British Championships. The Championship season comes to a close in a fortnight when teams from all over the UK will compete in the British Hill and Fell Relay Championships. This year the event is relatively local, in the Derwent Valley in the Peak District, where Holmfirth Harriers will field four teams.
