Blackfell race, English & Yorkshire County Fell Championships,  Saturday 6th July

Kettlewell village in the Yorkshire Dales provided a stunning setting for the Blackfell race last Saturday.  The 10 mile race with 2300 feet of climb began with a few miles of steady climb on a track out of the village before hitting rougher fell terrain and ascent of Great Whernside.

The event was the fourth in the series of six English Championship races and also incorporated the Yorkshire Fell Championships.  Holmfirth Harriers had also included it in their Club Fell Championships and had eight runners turn out in a field of 275 starters.

First home was Lewis Byram, more used to competing in triathlon at a high level.  The less familiar off-road terrain proved a challenge but he did well to come home 51st and 6th Under 23 overall in 1:26:15 and pick up the Yorkshire U23 Bronze medal.

Helen Berry, who is currently leading both the women’s V40 and V45 English Championships had a superb run, finishing 4th woman and 71st overall in 1:29:52 and claiming maximum points for both age group categories.  She was first Yorkshire woman home, taking the County title.

Katie Walshaw had made a very strong start in the race, leading the women for most of the way.  Despite tiring in the last couple of miles and finishing 8th overall in 1:34:39, she was still able to claim the Yorkshire bronze medal.

Backed up by Jean Shotter in 69th woman in 2:11:39, the Holmfirth trio were (tbc) Yorkshire team.

Other Holmfirth results: 183rd Ian Goulding 1:52:14, 192nd Phil Hobbs 1:54:25, 202nd Keith Baird 1:56:15

The following day the juniors were in action at the final English Junior Fell Championship ‘Up the Nab’ race from Glossop.  Holmfirth had Isabel Richardson taking 3rd place in the U17 Girls race and Declan Levay 5th in the U13 Boys race.  The duo have performed very well in the Championship races,  with Declan finishing just outside the medals in 4th.  Isabel had excellent results in the final two races but didn’t compete in enough races to give her an overall position this year.
