59 athletes on this year's start line

On Saturday 22 December 2018, members of Holmfirth Harriers AC gathered at Honley Cricket Club to take part in the club’s oldest and most prestigious race, the Tinker Cup, which was first contested in 1908. Fifty-nine members started the race including 18 ladies and 13 novices taking part in the race for the first time (not eligible to win the Tinker Cup) in the 99th running of the event. The weather was fine, but after a lot of heavy rainfall, conditions were quite muddy over the multi-terrain course with numerous obstacles to negotiate. The route crosses Long Lane, Thong Lane, New Road in Netherthong, down to Mark Bottoms, picking-up Hill Lane and Binns Lane in Upperthong, before returning to the finish on the recreation ground to the rear of Honley Cricket Pavilion.

The younger men set the early pace and by the time they reached New Road in Netherthong, Chris Law had a slight advantage over novice, Aaron Kettlewell and Lewis Byram, followed by two other novices Ted Chamberlain and Fionn Kerry. A rapidly improving Jake Harman was next in pursuit of the leaders  with Clark Hind close behind and Ladies captain, Helen Berry, the first female, another Tinker Cup veteran Chris Beadle followed closely by youngsters Harry Shelbourne and second female Lucy Byram. On the return from Upperthong Chris Law was still leading, with Lewis Byram moving into 2nd place and Aaron Kettlewell third. The chasing group had maintained their places with the exception of Clark Hind who had retired and Chris Beadle having a great run moved ahead of Helen Berry with Harry Shelbourne in close proximity. There were 8 former winners of the Tinker Cup in this years’ race including the oldest athlete, Roger Bradley who won the handicap in 1975. The leading athletes maintained their positions to the finish with Chris Law winning the race and the Ian Roberts Trophy for a third time, in 44.46. Lewis Byram was 2nd in 45.26 and Aaron Kettlewell 3rd in 45.47. Fastest lady and winner of the Norman Haigh Memorial Trophy for the third time was Helen Berry in 9th place overall (51.57), Lucy Byram finished 2nd lady (10th overall 52.39) and Helena Croft 3rd lady in 21st place overall (58.46).

Tinker Cup winner, Nick Helm

The 2018 handicap winner of the coveted Tinker Cup was Nick Helm who obviously didn’t think he stood any chance of winning and had gone home prior to the presentation and was surprised to hear he had won the Tinker Cup recording an actual time of 1.05.51 and a handicap time of 42.21.  Second and third places on handicap were Jake Harman 6th overall (actual time 50.21, handicap time 42.51) and Ian Goulding 26th overall (actual time 1.01.04, handicap time 43.04). The first three novices were Aaron Kettlewell, Ted Chamberlain and 17 year-old Fionn Kerry who finished in 4th, 5th and 6th places with only 24 seconds between 4th and 6th places. The first female novice was Clare Lock in 31st place overall (1.05.12).
