Holmfirth Harriers F55+ Team win Bronze Medals at National Vets Relays

On Saturday 28th April 4 teams of Holmfirth Harriers Veteran runners made the long trip to Sutton Park, Sutton Coldfield to take part in the BMAF Road Relays, the National Veterans (or Masters as they are now referred as) Road Relay Championships. Teams could be seen from as far apart as Cumbernauld in the north, Norwich in the east, Exmouth in the south and Gloucester in the West.

With quite a few runners unavailable we managed to get out just F45+, F55+, M45+ and M65+ teams. The course undulates through the park on good tarmac paths and was 5.08K in length.

The highlight of the day was a superb bronze medal winning performance by the F55+ team of Lesley Ewart, Karen Sinkinson and Val Battye. The team were never out of the top three with Lesley, 22:20 coming in 3rd on leg 1, Karen, 23:30, gaining a place to move up to 2nd on leg 2 and Val, 24.56, dropping just one place to a very fast last leg runner from Burnden Road Runners, who ran the second fastest leg of the day. So third place and Bronze medals, a fantastic result.

The last race of the day saw the M45+ team made up of Steve Green M45, Mike Fanning M50, Jonny Sykes M55 and John Ewart M60 take to the “road”. Steve came in 7th in 17:14, the fastest time by a Holmfirth runner on the day. Mike ran leg 2 in 17:41, picking up two more places to 5th, Jonny on leg 3 ran 19:22 and dropped to 11th and John on the final leg ran 20:32 to finish 15th of 41 teams a very creditable performance with two older age group runners in the team.
