On Saturday 9 May 2020, Holmfirth Harriers welcomes runners to the very first Castle Hill Challenge Trail Half Marathon and 10k! Open to the general public and all levels of runner, this challenging route tackles some of the most spectacular West Yorkshire countryside and enjoys stunning views from the top of Castle Hill and the famous Victoria Tower on the half marathon route. The race is being organised in aid of local charity, Hollybank Trust.

Race information

Starting near Honley, participants will tackle a variety of paths, tracks, woodlands up to Farnley Tyas before plunging down through the woods below Castle Hill. A further climb on rural paths and open fields takes us over the Castle Hill site, passing the tower with fantastic views in all directions. We then loop back towards Farnley Tyas before repeating the same anticlockwise ascent to the tower. We then return back to Honley via the same route as the outward course. The route is full of surprises, and over a wide variety of trail surfaces. The 10k follows the same route but does not go over Castle Hill. The half marathon involves 2600 feet of incline, while the 10k route features 935 feet of incline.

The race permit is applied for through the Trail Association which is affiliated to UK Athletics and therefore the race is run under UKA rules. There will be winner prizes up for grabs, plus age group and Yorkshire Vets prizes. The race will be electronically timed and chipped. Route maps will be posted on this page ahead of race day.

All entrants will receive a runner pack in the post well ahead of race day. This will include all key information, plus your race number. A unique gift will be awarded to all race finishers.

The race is open to people aged 18 and over, and is priced as follows:-

  • Half Marathon entry: £20 for affiliated UKA athletes*, £22 unaffiliated.
  • 10K entry: £15 for affiliated UKA athletes*, £17 unaffiliated.
