Sunny Delight for Holmfirth in Cross Relays

It is rare to run a cross country race in dry weather, let alone hot sunshine and dry ground but such were the conditions last Saturday at Graves Park in Sheffield for the Northern Cross country Relay Championship. Like the road version the week before the relays brought together teams from all over the North of England and the competition was fierce. The Holmfirth contingent proved well able to face the challenge and came away with 2 sets of Northern team medals – the best performance from the club at this level of competition for many years.

Bronze Medal delight

U13 Girls Team Olivia Sykes and Lucy and Erica Byram Once again the U13 girls proved the highlight from the junior ranks. Facing stiff competition the Silver medal winners from last week, Olivia Sykes and Lucy and Erica Byram came under real pressure and were able to hang for bronze medals and hold off the threat from Stockport Harriers, Liverpool Harriers this week in gold medal position and last week’s winners Hallamshire in silver, Olivia Sykes’ time on first leg of 5.47 the 5th fastest time on the day.

In addition to the U13 “A” team Holmfirth were able to field 3 other teams of girls who all competed strongly in their age groups.  The U13 “B” of Daisy Hinchcliffe, Amy Kettlewell and Issy Haley-Porteous finishing 23rd and the U15 team of Harmonie Waterman, Lucy Farquhar and Sophie Spencer 14th. For the first time in a area championship U11 teams were able to compete and the girls team of Libby Shepherd, Sophie Allan and Hollie Bailey-Taylor had a great run to finish 6th with Libby running the 8th fastest time of the day. Ruby Sykes ran a lone first leg in the U17 and finished strongly in 11th place.

With Jimmy Burke injured  and unable to run the U11 boys team were unable to finish a complete team but Daniel Howatson and Fionn Kerry both ran strongly and showed their promise lying in 3rd place after 2 legs. Two teams of U13 boys competed for Holmfirth the “A”team of Andrew Farquhar, Isaac Shepherd and Lewis Bartholomew running well in a very close category for 6th place and the “B” of Nicky Farquhar, Shea Kerry and George Orton not far behind them in 14th. Lewis Byram, Aaron Kettlewell and Aaron Arthur made up the U15 boys team. The boys ran well in spite of the heat finishing with a strong leg from Aaron Arthur, 13th place in the largest age group. Robert Hinchcliffe, like Ruby running a first leg ran well in 15th place in the U17 race.

Stunning Silver for Senior Women

Senior Women’ team. Katie Walshaw, Helen Berry and Claire Leaver The Holmfirth ladies fielded a strong team and were hopeful of a medal.  Katie Walshaw got the team off to a flying start, running the third fastest time of the day in 11:54 and finishing in second place, behind Durham City Harriers.  Ladies' Captain, Helen Berry, ran well on the second leg  in a time of 12:48. Although she was caught early on by Leeds City, she in turn passed the Durham City athlete, thus maintaining the team's second place.   The responsibility of the third and final leg was taken on by Claire Leaver.  Claire made a steady start but ensured the chasing teams of Leeds City and Hallamshire were kept at bay with a fantastic effort over the last 400 metres, securing the team a Northern Athletics silver medal, in an excellent time of 13:14 and an overall time of 37:56.  The ladies race was won by Leeds City in 36:01 and the fastest leg of the day went to Rosie Smith of Durham City on leg 1 in 11:13.

With Max Kaye injuring himself training on Thursday the senior men were one short for their team of 4 however the young team ran well and were 21st after 3 of the 4 legs Richard Smith with another excellent run was 8th fastest on his leg and Max Lawton and Jake Richardson, both only 17, running well, their first experience running in the senior ranks.

Welcome to the Cross Country pages of Holmfirth Harriers AC. If you’re new to cross country or just thinking about having ago then Holmfirth competes in the WYCC league. This is a series of 4 races, usually in October, November and December (see Race Calendar on Website) and these races are suitable for runners of all abilities. Races start in the morning for juniors, with the senior women usually running at about 1.00pm and the senior men at about 2.00pm. Races are usually in parkland settings but in wet weather can be very muddy when studded shoes or ideally cross country spikes should be worn. In very dry conditions trail shoes can sometimes be used. If you are interested in having ago then talk to Roger Bradley, John Ewart or Helen Berry a.s.a.p. The entry sheet is on the Cross Country notice board and the cost is £7 for all 4 races.

Holmfirth Harriers also compete in the Yorkshire, Northern and English National CC Championships plus the YVAA CC Championships (see Vets Pages) which usually take place in January / February.

In order to get a Cross Country Page up and running on the website I (Rob K) am putting this together but really have more than enough to do with the Vets so if anyone would like to take over and put info., photos, race reports or whatever you like onto the page, then please contact me (contact on Vets page). It is only a short season with one or at the most two events in a month from October to February.
