On Sunday nine teams of Holmfirth Veterans travelled to Saltaire for the YVAA Road Relays. This was the first time this event had been held at Saltaire and many thanks are due to the team from Eccleshill Runners and others in the Airedale Athletic affiliation that helped on the day. The mainly flat 2.8 mile legs of the relay took in tarmac paths, river and canal bank paths and a short stretch on grass. Forty seven teams from 13 Yorkshire clubs took part on a warm but blustery day and all seemed to enjoy the event. With many clubs putting out both ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams it shows the strength in depth in veteran running in Yorkshire, a picture that is repeated throughout the country. As usual of late in terms of medals it was our women’s teams that had the most success with both the F35 – 44 team of Helen Berry, Margaret Sykes and Jacqui Khoueiry and the F55+ team of Lesley Ewart, Jeanette Pierson and Den Kersey winning their age group titles.

The F45 – 54 team of Karen Sinkinson, Rowan Eastwood and Julia Johnson were third team in their age group. Helen Berry and Lesley Ewart also ran the fastest laps in their respective age groups. In the men’s races the M40 - 49 team of Dave Watson, Gary Graham, James Durrans and Jonathan Sykes were third (Dave running the fastest lap in the age group) while the M60 - 69 team of Steve Beardsell, Jeff Pierson and Rob Kersey were second in their age group.

The M50 - 59 team of Dave Shepherd, John Philpott and Kevin Yewlett were the most tightly grouped team for times, running 18:44, 18;47 and 18:43. In the M35 – 39 team we were short of younger vets so Phil Hobbs and Maz Khoueiry stepped down an age group to join Jared Croft and Graham Howatson to make up the team. The team found the pace very hot with 13 out of the 24 runners running under 17 minutes for the laps but still ran well with times between 17:32 and 18:49.

The other two teams running for Holmfirth were both ‘B’ teams but both ran so well that they came in 4th team in their age groups. The F35 – 44 ‘B’ team of Helen Standing, Debbie Hall and Lorraine Smith coming 4th out of 9 teams and beating three ‘A’ teams. The other ‘B’ team was in the M60 – 69 age group and consisted of Phil Senior, Tim Cock (now 70) and Martin Seddon.

Many thanks to all that ran on the day, a true team event.

The Vets section is one of the largest and best supported sections of the club. We compete in YVAA Grand Prix multi – terrain races, Road Relays Championships, Cross Country Championships, Fell Championships, the many Road Championship races and The Track and Field Champs. We also send teams to the National Road Relays at Sutton Park each year. Road Relay and Cross Country

Championships are particularly well supported with 30+ runners often turning out for the teams. When we get a strong team out we are always in contention for medals and have won silver medals at the BMAF National Road Relays in recent years as well as many Yorkshire medals in all events.

Winning medals is great for the individuals, teams and club of course but is not the only reason for taking part. Without the non ‘A team’ runners these events would be not only a lot less enjoyable as a team but virtually empty as an event. We welcome all vets into our teams no matter what standard so if you’re over 35 and fancy a run out please join us.

Vets records

For some time Ive been trying to collect your times for distances from 5K to a Marathon. While I have managed to cajole some information out of a few people there are still loads of runners that have not given me any times. As you will see (on the MEMBER's Page) weve posted those. Almost any time supplied is likely to get in the top ten simply because we have so few contributors. So why not let me have your times and see yourself in the top ten for your age group. Click on the link (to e-amil ROB) at the top of the page, then Email your best times. Thanks.
