Ladies

Yorkshire Athletics Road Relays – 10th September

Kath Farquhar,Katie Walshaw, Helen Berry and Jacqui Khouiery Holmfirth’s ladies were confident of a medal in their event, having won the Championship in 2010 and with seven of the club’s best runners available the ‘A’ team and incomplete ‘B’ team were sure to feature strongly . The 4 stage race was run over a 2 lap, 4.3km course.  First off for the ‘A’ team was Katie Walshaw who, whilst quickly taking the lead out of the stadium, found herself amongst tough competition.  Jenny Blizzard of Rotherham soon overtook Katie and extended her lead throughout the race finishing 54 seconds clear.  For a while Katie had another athlete on her shoulder but managed to shake her off on the second lap, clocking the 3rd fastest time of the day in 15:30 and giving her team mates a comfortable gap on the handover.   Ladies’ Captain, Helen Berry, took over on leg 2 and managed to close the gap on Rotherham down to 15 seconds in a time of 16:18.  Aware that the chasing teams of Bingley and Wakefield had strong final leg runners, third leg runner, Jacqui Khouiery ran a strong race in 16:40 to close the gap further on the leader to just 10 seconds.  Kath Farquhar ran well on the final leg, keeping the chasing teams at bay and bringing the team home comfortably in silver medal position in a time of 16:43 (65:11 overall).

Kath Farquhar,Cara Penfold, Claire Leaver, Helen Berry, Jacqui Khouiery and Maggie Sykes A last minute withdrawal meant that Holmfirth’s  ladies ‘B’ team was not complete and did not therefore get a final placing in the race.  Nevertheless the three athletes ran very well and recorded some pleasing times.  Claire Leaver took on the challenge of the first leg, handing over in 8th position in 16:58.  Maggie Sykes brought the team up to 5th place in 16:59 on leg 2 and Cara Penfold held that position clocking 18:47.

The ladies’ event was won by Rotherham Harriers in 64:28.  The fastest time recorded was 14:36 Jenny Blizzard of the same club.
