Juniors take on the best in Birmingham

The undulating Sutton Park course which has hosted the National Relays for both senior and junior athletes for many years was once again home to relay action on Sunday. Teams from across the country who had gathered on Saturday to contest the senior event reconvened on Sunday for turn of the junior athletes. As befits a national championship the course challenges even the best athletes and particularly the younger athletes as the distance of 3800m is the same across the age groups.

After Silver medals in the Northern relays 3 weekends ago the U13 girls trio of Lucy Byram, Erica Byram and Olivia Sykes were once again in action. In a race that featured last years champions and the champions from all the other regional relays the girls knew they were up against stiff competition. Olivia  lead out the team on leg one coming through the field and handing on to Erica in a time of 14.42 in 7th position, a time that proved to be the 10th fastest of the day. Erica battled hard and managed to move up to 4th place by the end of her leg running a time of 15.24. Lucy took over and had a great run improving on her time at last year’s event by over a minute coming home in 8th position in 15.51. A fantastic result in this standard of competition.

The U13 boys race also featured a team of Holmfirth athletes brothers Andrew and Nicky Farquhar lead out by Lewis Bartholomew on leg one. Lewis in his first experience of this event completed the course in 15.29 handing on in 31st place. Nicky ran strongly just dipping under 16minutes in 15.59 handing on to Andrew still in 31st. On the last leg  Andrew managed to pass 4 athletes running a time of 15.43 and finishing in 27th spot.

Also finishing 27th team were the U15 girls, Sophie Spencer, Lucy Farquhar and Harmonie Waterman .  Sophie Spencer had the dubious honour of running on first leg which with 68 starters was fast and furious. Coming home in 46th in a time of 16.18 Sophie handed on to Lucy who moved through the field to 39th position in a time of 16.13. Harmonie on last leg, as last year made considerable gains and moved the team up to 27th with at time of 15.24.

Holmfirth’s junior will next be in action in the West Yorkshire Cross Country League Race 2 in York on 29th October.
