Senior Fell Championship update & current standings

With August now behind us, we are moving towards the business end of this year’s Championship, with only 3 races left in the series. I’m very pleased to see that well over 50 Harriers have attempted at least one race, with nearly half running twice or more.

With the running of the Denis Stitt race in August, we have completed all 3 local races that the Harriers promote & so have our Local Race championship winner. 5 Harriers (Rob Halstead, Debbie Hall, Phil Hobbs, Jim Durrans & Helen Berry) completed all 3 races, but although on the same number of points, Helen just pipped Jim to the title by virtue of beating him in 2 of the 3 races – well done to her!

The Championship table is starting to take shape for both the men & the ladies. With 9 men & 6 ladies having completed 3 races or more, they could all still have a chance of figuring in the final shake-up if they run the final 3 races. Currently for the men, Phil Hobbs is ahead of Jim Durrans & Gavin Baxter, whilst for the ladies, Helen Berry will take some catching having secured nearly maximum points from her 6 counting races.

The ‘All to Count’ table is still showing Helen Berry & Phil Hobbs some way ahead of everyone else, having competed in 7 of the 9 available races, but with a maximum 90 points still to be won, that could still change.

The next 2 races present very different challenges. First up is the classic Lakeland Three Shires race on Saturday 17th September – a category AL race, covering 13 miles & 4000 feet of ascent over 4 Lakeland peaks. This is followed by the Great Whernside race from Kettlewell on 29th October – a short & sharp category AS race at 4miles & 1550 feet, which has also been chosen as this year’s Yorkshire Championship race, which will ensure some decent competition. Hope to see some of you there.

Welcome to the fell running section. If you have an aversion to tarmac and the prospect of scrambling up steep-sided hills and careering down the other side on paths mainly populated by nimble-footed sheep, come rain, shine or snow sounds like fun, then fell running is for you. Holmfirth Harriers has a long and glorious history of running on the fells. Recent individual achievements include three consecutive wins in the Old County Tops for Tom Brunt and a silver medal in the Yorkshire championships for Helen Berry. On the team front we have had a series of solid performances in the FRA relays and the Ian Hodgson. In the 2009 Calderdale Way Relay the women were 4th and the men equalled their best ever performance with a magnificent 3rd place.
