Fell Championship update & Final standings

Those who braved the bogs of the Shepherd’s Skyline brought this year’s Championship to an end in muddy style! For the men, over 40 took part throughout the year, with 10 completing at least 3 races, but it is Jim Durrans in only his first full season of fell racing who has topped the Championship table on 141 points - a great achievement! Second again, on 135 points, is Phil Hobbs and in 3rd place & the only other competitor to complete the necessary 6 races is Rob Halstead, on 101 points (I’m sure he’ll be buying Jim Sommerville a pint by way of thanks for his gallant favour at the Three Shires race).

For the ladies, although 17 took part during the year, injury & other absences meant only 2 ladies completed the necessary 6 races. Congratulations to Helen Berry who has retained her title, scoring 88 points from a maximum 90, with Karen Sinkinson finishing the season strongly in 2nd place, on 81 points. Phil Hobbs has managed to retain the All-to-Count title, enjoying most of the races he chose this year, scoring 204 points from 8 races, ahead of Helen Berry & Jim Durrans.

Looking ahead to 2012, the absence of fell running on the Olympic calendar will allow us all to concentrate once more on the Harriers’ Championship! With the great success of our juniors in the English championships, I’ll be once again selecting some races that also have junior races on the same day.

There will be a slight change in the format next year. The number of races is increasing to 15 and to qualify, 7 races will have to be completed (again, including 1 of each length). There are some new races and some old favourites & I have included 3 of the English Championship races, together with the Yorkshire Championship race (The Three Peaks – not for the feint-hearted). I’ve also left some space in September/October for us all to recover before the Ian Hodgson & FRA Relays - enjoy!

Welcome to the fell running section. If you have an aversion to tarmac and the prospect of scrambling up steep-sided hills and careering down the other side on paths mainly populated by nimble-footed sheep, come rain, shine or snow sounds like fun, then fell running is for you. Holmfirth Harriers has a long and glorious history of running on the fells. Recent individual achievements include three consecutive wins in the Old County Tops for Tom Brunt and a silver medal in the Yorkshire championships for Helen Berry. On the team front we have had a series of solid performances in the FRA relays and the Ian Hodgson. In the 2009 Calderdale Way Relay the women were 4th and the men equalled their best ever performance with a magnificent 3rd place.
