Sedbergh Hills Fell Race, English Championship counter, 21st August

Helen BerryThe 2011 English Fell Running Champions were crowned last weekend as the Championship series came to a conclusion on Sunday in the final race at Sedbergh in Cumbria.  The 14 mile route takes in 6000 feet of climb with the summits of Arrant Haw, Castley Knotts and The Calf before returning via Winder summit and back to Sedbergh village.  The terrain is all considered runnable with plenty of grassy tracks, but the race is described by some as relentless and deceptively hard!  During the latter stages of the race the mist came down on The Calf and Winder, making visibility poor for all but the front runners.

Three hardy Holmfirth Harriers made the trip north, two of whom were contesting medal positions.  Veteran Andy Hauser secured his well deserved bronze medal in the overall Championship by finishing 3rd V55 and 77th overall at Sedbergh.  Tom Brunt who prefers these longer races ran well in the quality field and was pleased with his top 30 place.

The Ladies’ Championship had already been decided based on points awarded from the previous five races and with the gold and silver medallists opting not to compete at Sedbergh, the fight was very much on for bronze.  Holmfirth Harriers Ladies Captain, Helen Berry, had held on to third place in the series until Sedbergh but she knew it was going to be tough to maintain it, particularly given that her closest rivals could increase their points score significantly in the absence of the two leading ladies .   Helen finished in 6th place which although credible in a class field was not sufficient to hold onto the bronze medal position.  She finished 4th equal with Judith Jepson of Dark Peak and Mel Price of Mercia, all on 107 points whilst Louise Roberts of Kendal, who finished 3rd on Sunday took the bronze with 109 points.  The Championship was won by Lauren Jeska of Todmorden, with Helen Fines of Calder Valley taking the silver.

Andy HauserFull results (Holmfirth unless otherwise stated): 1st Morgan Donnelly (Borrowdale) 2:02:44, 28th Tom Brunt 2:19:57, 77th & 3rd V55 Andy Hauser 2:33:26, 73rd & 1st lady Jackie Lee (Eryri) 2:32:43, 111th & 6th lady Helen Berry 2:45:27. 334 finishers.

Welcome to the fell running section. If you have an aversion to tarmac and the prospect of scrambling up steep-sided hills and careering down the other side on paths mainly populated by nimble-footed sheep, come rain, shine or snow sounds like fun, then fell running is for you. Holmfirth Harriers has a long and glorious history of running on the fells. Recent individual achievements include three consecutive wins in the Old County Tops for Tom Brunt and a silver medal in the Yorkshire championships for Helen Berry. On the team front we have had a series of solid performances in the FRA relays and the Ian Hodgson. In the 2009 Calderdale Way Relay the women were 4th and the men equalled their best ever performance with a magnificent 3rd place.
