Junior Fell Championship update & current standings - 13 september 2011

The back-end of Hurricane Katia appears to be the signal that summer is officially over, which leaves us over three-quarters of the way through the 10 races in this year’s Championship. The numbers taking part have increased again to 36 and virtually everyone has run 3 races or more. Since the last update, Lewis Byram has been crowned both the U14 English Uphill champion & more importantly, the U14 Yorkshire champion as well! In the 3 races that have taken place, we have had a number of top 3 placings, with George Hobbs, Sunni Waterman, Erica & Lucy Byram, Seth Waterman & Ruby Sykes all taking home prizes.

With only 2 races left to go, some categories are wide open, whilst others are virtually over bar the shouting! The U10 Boys will be a three-horse race between George Hobbs, Harry Hobbs & Callum Durrans who are all within 9 points of each other. For the girls, Sunni Waterman is now unbeatable on maximum points & is our first champion – well done to her! Moving up to the U12 Boys, Lewis Bartholomew, Tiras Waterman, Jimmy Burke & Nicky Farquhar are all still involved & with the best 5 races to count, the table will no doubt change again. For the U12 Girls, competition is equally tight, with Erica Byram just 6 points ahead of her sister Lucy & 8 points ahead of Daisy-Mae Smith (who has completed all 8 races so far).

Eddie Hinchliffe, another ever-present, is now just 8 points behind Lewis Byram & 2 points ahead of Seth Waterman in the U14 Boys, whilst Sophie Spencer is still leading the U14 Girls’ competition from Olivia Sykes. Finally, Robert Hinchliffe has sown up the U16 Boys’ championship, whilst Ruby Sykes has also claimed the U16 Girls crown – well done to both of them.

The final 2 races are the Viking Chase meeting in the Cleveland Hills on Sunday 25th September & the Shepherds Skyline races over at Todmorden on Saturday 5th November. The Viking Chase is also the last counter in this year’s English Championship, where we have a number of athletes looking for top 3 places. In addition, Holmfirth are currently in 3rd place in the Club Championship table, only 6 points behind the leaders, Blackburn Harriers. With points determined by the 3 best performances at each meeting, let’s try & put our strongest team out – see you there!

Welcome to the fell running section. If you have an aversion to tarmac and the prospect of scrambling up steep-sided hills and careering down the other side on paths mainly populated by nimble-footed sheep, come rain, shine or snow sounds like fun, then fell running is for you. Holmfirth Harriers has a long and glorious history of running on the fells. Recent individual achievements include three consecutive wins in the Old County Tops for Tom Brunt and a silver medal in the Yorkshire championships for Helen Berry. On the team front we have had a series of solid performances in the FRA relays and the Ian Hodgson. In the 2009 Calderdale Way Relay the women were 4th and the men equalled their best ever performance with a magnificent 3rd place.
