Junior Fell Championship update & final standings, 12 December 2011

The brilliant boggy fun at the Shepherd’s Skyline brought this year’s Championship to an end in muddy style! We had nearly 40 juniors taking part in the 10 race series throughout the year, with over half competing in at least 3 races. It was great to see so many Holmfirth vests at races near and far & all that took part seemed to enjoy the experience, whatever the weather!
The final placings are as follows:

  • U10 Boys – 1st Callum Durrans, 2nd George Hobbs & 3rd Harry Hobbs.
  • U10 Girls – 1st Sunni Waterman
  • U12 Boys – 1st Jimmy Burke, 2nd Nicky Farquhar & 3rd Tiras Waterman
  • U12 Girls – 1st Erica Byram, 2nd Lucy Byram & 3rd Daisy-Mae Smith
  • U14 Boys – 1st Lewis Byram, 2nd Eddie Hinchliffe & 3rd Seth Waterman
  • U14 Girls – 1st Sophie Spencer
  • U16 Boys – 1st Robert Hinchliffe
  • U16 Girls – 1st Ruby Sykes

There were some great performances throughout the year, particularly in the English Championship and Yorkshire Championship races, with the end result that Holmfirth finished 2nd team in the English Championship, just 2 points behind the winners.

Looking ahead to 2012, the format of the competition will remain the same, with 10 races to choose from & the best 5 to count. I have chosen all the English Championship races this time, so that hopefully we can at least repeat this year’s success! The last race will be at the end of August, so that this time, there are no clashes with the start of the Cross country season. Here’s to a great 2012!

Welcome to the fell running section. If you have an aversion to tarmac and the prospect of scrambling up steep-sided hills and careering down the other side on paths mainly populated by nimble-footed sheep, come rain, shine or snow sounds like fun, then fell running is for you. Holmfirth Harriers has a long and glorious history of running on the fells. Recent individual achievements include three consecutive wins in the Old County Tops for Tom Brunt and a silver medal in the Yorkshire championships for Helen Berry. On the team front we have had a series of solid performances in the FRA relays and the Ian Hodgson. In the 2009 Calderdale Way Relay the women were 4th and the men equalled their best ever performance with a magnificent 3rd place.
