Sports Report: CP Sports National Championships, Nottingham

Jeremey Helm - CP Track Atlete of the YearHolmfirth Harriers, Jeremy Helm was presented with the Cerebral PalsyTrack Athlete of the Year Award last Saturday at the CP National Championships, which took place at the Harvey Hadden Stadium in Nottingham. The 27 year-old Honley man has been a member of Holmfirth Harriers since the age of 14 and has won medals previously in disability championships. Jeremy is a very modest man and does not consider his times particularly fast, because he compares himself with able bodied athletes in his club. His Coach constantly reminds him how fantastic his times are for someone with such severe disabilities. He is a very popular member of the training group and trains extremely hard, despite repeatedly dislocating his shoulder, which he plans to have surgery to correct the problem later this year.

Jeremy started his track season in June at the CP Sports Grand Prix meeting at Wigan and then after a long journey to Exeter in July, was rewarded with personal bests of 77.57 and 2.58.33 for the 400m and 800m respectively. At the Tartan Games in Gateshead last month he lowered his PB’s to 76.94 and 2.56.6, a massive improvement from his previous best marks of 79.6 which he gained in 2009 and 3.00.2 that he recorded last year.Although the windy conditions last weekend at the National Championships in Nottingham scuppered his chances to lower his times further, he did record consistently good marks of 77.14 and 2.57, which are close to his best performances.

His disability classification is T37, which covers varying levels of disability and often results in him competing against athletes who have much less disability. This does not deter Jeremy from competition and he looks forward to training hard this winter with his clubmates in his quest to improve his times in Olympic year.
