West Yorkshire Schools Track & Field Championships
Holmfirth Harriers young athletes took 2 golds, 1 silver and 1 bronze when they competed for Kirklees at in the West Yorkshire Schools Track & Field Championships held at Princess Mary Stadium, Cleckheaton, on Saturday. These championships are a stepping stone to the prestigious English Schools Athletics Championships where former British athletics greats such as Kelly Holmes Seb Coe, Steve Ovett, Steve Backley and Denise Lewis first came to prominence.
In the sprints Jordan Toth was first in action winning his heat of the Senior Boys 100m to go through to the final later in the day. His time in the final of 11.12secs took him across the line in first place. Jacob Henton in the Intermediate boys 400m final took 4 th place in 53.53secs.
The Intermediate and Senior boys 1500m saw one of the most closely contested and exciting races of the day. Max Kaye set the initial pace leading from the start. As the pace picked up he held his position well driving down the finishing straight to win in 4mins 9.83secs.
In the Intermediate boys 3000m, Thomas Traviss-Pollard was chasing Gordon Benson, the current National champion from Leeds. Thomas began to tire after lap five, but stilled pulled away from the remaining athletes to take second in a time of 9mins 26.14secs.
The Booth twins had excellent runs in their championship events. Georgia ran strongly in the Intermediate girls 800m final recording 2mins 40.52secs, where as Allanah‘s time of 5mins 47.76secs in the Intermediate girls 1500m final gave her an excellent 3 rd place.
The Junior Girls events saw Sophie Spencer finishing 5 th in her heat of the 800m with a time of 2mins 38.91secs. Later in the day Lucy Farquhar and Ruby Sykes lined up for the 1500m in their first Schools track & Field championship event recording 5mins 25secs and 5mins 30.4secs respectively. It was great to see Holmfirth athletes competing in their events and reaping the reward for their consistent hard work in training.
Congratulations to Max Kaye and Jordan Toth who have been selected to represent West Yorkshire Schools at the English Schools Track & Field Championships in July.
Northern U17/U15 Track & Field Championships
Although the sun shone brightly athletes were faced with blustery conditions at Leigh on the final day of the Northern U17/U15 Track & Field Championships. The weekend meeting is a show case for the regions top young athletes and Holmfirth’s top junior distance athletes Max Kaye and Thomas Traviss-Pollard were amongst them, having previously achieved the necessary standards required.
The first in action was Max Kaye in the heats of the U/17 men’s 1500m which he controlled from the start crossing the line first. Within two hours he was on the track again for the final. Max was in the leading group of five that broke away with 700m to go. It was Shildon’s Cameron Boyek who made the decisive break on the last lap coming home to claim the gold medal in a time of 4mins 05.13secs. Max was in bronze medal position until the final 50metres when a late surge took him past an ‘in form’ Jack Derham from Goole AC, to snatch the Silver medal in a new best time of 4mins 07.59secs.
Thomas Traviss-Pollard had his sights on his first individual Northern medal in the last track event of the meeting, the U/17 men’s 3000m. The opening laps were tactical and the athletes were in close order. As the race developed, Thomas moved up to stay in contact with the leading three. Thomas showed tactical acumen, sheltering behind the bigger athletes into the wind on the back straight, then working hard to stay with them each time the wind was behind them in the finishing straight. Thomas made his break for gold with 450m to go, driving past the three athletes to take the lead. Only Alan McKeown could stay with him. Thomas battled to hang on but Mckeown edged past at the 150m mark taking the gold medal in a time of 9mins 08.21secs. Thomas held his form well to the line to claim the silver medal with a time of 9mins 10.36secs.
These were both excellent individual performances in high quality fields.
